Dalat Labour Day Floorball CHallenge: The joy of the Unexpected

Labour Day Floorball Challenge is a competition, anually organized by Dalat International School. Held on the 1st and 2nd of May, Contact took part in competition, not expecting much, but eager to learn and to gather more exposure for ourselves. Two teams , NTU Hurricanes as well as the SGS Juniors, participated in this competition as well, coming down all the way from Singapore. For the competition pool, we were drawn into the pool consisting of Dalat 2, Ztec 2, SGS Juniors and us, Contact. We played our hearts out on the first day, qualifying for the semi-finals, and winning an unexpected bronze medal the following day. Contact clearly showed what it was on those two days respectively, playing as a team, and believing that team work is as important as individual skills. Though a little shaky at the start of the competition, we managed to play our best against the more experienced and stronger teams. We played our game and we did it to the best our abilities.

Closure for PFL 2009

The Penang Floorball League 2009 ended on the 4th Aug with great satisfaction as all the teams enjoyed themselves in the 2 month long league. The games were filled with great anticipation, energy, and team spirit. Team Contact did not start the league well losing our first 2 games which were there most important in the league for us. However, we managed to come back and will all the remaining 3 games, but that was not enough to secure us a medal.

As there has already been much written about the games in the league, we did not think it necessary for us to write another review. So here are some of the reviews on our games with Minden UniHawks, Dalat Eagles, and Frontliners Spartans. Overall, the team played well and we are pleased with the synergy. We have learnt many things from this league as a team and as individuals as well. We are please to have every single person who has contributed to the making of the team. Thanks to all players and supporters!!

FireAnts Crumble

The second game in the Penang Floorball League was the key to FireAnts in trying to secure a medal. Knowing the strength of the teams in the league, it was important that the FireAnts win this one. The game between FireAnts and Innebandy has always been interesting as both teams are very similar in many ways. Thus it was important to go into the game fighting and sticking to a strategy.

The game started off rather well with both teams having equal chances but it was FireAnts who made their first defensive error which resulted in a goal against us. We fought on to equalise and it was a very tight first period as both teams drew 2-2 at the end of the period.

The second period started strong for the FireAnts with a goal coming within the first 10 seconds from the whistle. Innebandy equalised a couple of minutes later and the intensity of the game picked up tremendously after that. A controversial penalty was given against us, and things were downhill after that. Players began to loose focus and the strategy was falling apart. In the last 2 minutes of the game FireAnts practically gave 2 goals to Innebandy due to very silly defensive errors. End game 6-3 to Innebandy.

A sad day for FireAnts. Lessons on focus and mental strength need to be learnt as we saw it dropand crumble in the last two games with affected the results. Check out what others have to say in Borak Borak. Just click here.

3 more games to go and if FireAnts want to see anything from this year's league we will have to definately improve in the area of mental strength and teamwork. There is however, still a mathematical possibility of retaining the championship. We just need a miracle. ;)

Yet Another Slow Start

The Division One Penang Floorball League has just begun and Contact FireAnts being defending champions had to play the first game last Tuesday. It was not something that we wanted knowing that it will take some time for us to get into the league. We had never started strong as a team in all our previous outings. Something that we need to break away from. Besides that, we had to play the favorites to take the championship this year.

Well, as usual the FireAnts took a long time to get into the game. The team even seemed to be getting older as it struggled to play with a much faster team. Within minutes into the game and Ztec opened the score. It was a quick counter attack and from that point on the defense was just lost. Final score 0-7.

Although we knew that this was going to be a tough game and that the chances of winning were very very slim, we also know now that the sluggishness of the team contributed to the big scoreline. The only consolation that the team had was a goal scored by Edward in the second period that was disallowed by the referees as the whistle had gone just before the shot was taken.

Time for FireAnts to get their act together and play their game. Lets look forward to the next game coming on the 25th June. See you all there!

It has been a long time since we have added anything into our blog. Apologies to all who have been following.

PFL Division 2 is over and there has been much written about it in borakborakfloorball, so we will not repeat ourselves here (although we must say that not everything that is written there may be in agreement with our full opinion).

Division 1 is just around the corner and teams are ready to play their hearts out. We want to take this opportunity to introduce the team anthem that we have adopted. It is the motivation to our games and how we play them. Enjoy it by clicking the sidebox.

IFF Coaching Course

For the first time, an International Floorball Federation (IFF) certified Coaching Course was conducted in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from 4-5 November 2008. The course was attended by mostly the Singaporeans and a handful of Malaysians (mainly from Kuala Lumpur). Edward and Penny were the only Penangites represented in the course. Both Edward and Penny had the privilege of learning some coaching pointers from Christer Olsson once again. (Christer was in Penang in year 2003 to give a one-day basic coaching course).

The 2-day course covered basic technical and tactical skills for children and youth in schools, practical training on teaching players and school teachers, as well as basic game plays and special situations. There were classroom lectures as well as practical training in Sports Plaza, followed by game play each day. The course serves as a reminder that coaches need to constantly drill the players in the basics of floorball. Players need to possess basic skills as it is vital in developing not just oneself but also the team in general.

Apart from the coaching sessions, it was a good time to catch up with old friends; Christer and some from Singapore, namely Ngasti and wife, Jill Quek, Martha Quek, Sonia, and Sheila. Of course, it was also a good opportunity to meet new friends. As the saying goes, Floorball is about friendship!

UNLEASHED! v2.0

ContactSports Ministries was set up a year ago to service the community as well as to train people in sports and leadership. With that, comes the second edition of UNLEASHED!

UNLEASHED! is a sports leadership convention that draws sports personel as well as leaders for networking and growth.

“As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another. “ – Proverbs 27:17 (NIV)

Indeed, the 4 days/3 nights convention was geared towards sharpening one another, providing platform for networking and partnership with one another in sports ministry across Malaysia. God is good! This year, we had a total of 20 registered participants (2 from Sabah, 1 from KL and the rest from various churches in Penang).

The Convention started off light and easy to help the participants warm up to one another. Light team building activities were carried out, which geared the participants to think out of the box. “There are no fix ways to complete a task”; a very common phrase throughout the teambuilding session. Indeed there are no fix ways to develop and manage teams as everyone in the team is unique and special.

The Convention covered many aspects in developing ourselves as leaders as well as developing a sports ministry that would run alongside the church. The sessions helped deal with the heart of a leader in changing times; redeeming the lost through sports, etc.

Fun and challenging workshops; such as developing core muscle groups in the confines of our homes and body workout were carried out, giving practical ideas for development of our own physical fitness as well as using them to develop our teams. Apart from that, the participants had fun and fellowship over games at the field and the beach.

We were truly honored to have Pr. Jojo Henson (Eagle Point Covenant Fellowship),Pr. Daniel Loh (Georgetown Baptist Church), Mr. Paul Yong (Fitness First), Ms. Evelyn (Fitness First) and our very own, Pr. Edward Lim (Gateway City Church) to facilitate all the sessions. Their presence had definitely truly impacted and influenced the lives of the participants.

The Convention truly opened the eyes of the participants to have a better grasp of sports ministry as opposed to just using sports as an outreach program. We believe that the harvest will be overwhelming in time to come, and with that, we look forward to a greater partnership with one another to be the voice of God in the national sports arena. This vision will definitely drive us to the moment everything happens! To God be the glory and honor!!!

Z'liners-PFA Floorball Tournament

Meet the Hoppers, Jumpers and Sugar!
These names caught much attention especially during the Team Managers meeting held a few days before the tournament. Many wondered about the relation between these names and Contact. Well, please meet more ant species - Contact Hoppers, Contact Jumpers and Contact Sugar making its’ way to unleash their power and to make its’ bite and sting count on court!
In the recent Z’Liners-PFA Floorball Tournament , Contact Hoppers and Jumpers played in the Juniors U-14 while Contact Sugar played in the Ladies category.

The day started off with Contact Hoppers and Jumpers sweating it out on court against other teams from Frontliners, Ztec, FGA and Dalat. There were a total of 8 teams in the junior category. The teams were divided into two groups and played the preliminary matches round robin. Contact Hoppers comprised of Kai Sheng (Team Captain), Don, Alex and Eythan whilst Contact Jumpers comprised Ben Lim (Team Captain), Joseph, Joshua Wong and Isaac Ng.
Contact Hoppers played well to emerge 1st Runner Up in the whole tournament. They definitely could have done better if they were to run a whole lot more! Contact Jumpers did fairly well although they only managed to finish 4th in the placing match. A little speed, a little determination would definitely earn them one or two spot above their current placing.

All Star Players in Junior U14 went to Eythan (Contact Hoppers) and two Dalat players (sorry, forgot their names).

After the Junior games, the Ladies made their appearance on court. The court size and goal was bigger than the ones that the juniors played in. The atmosphere was ‘bigger’ as well! Screaming, cheering and laughter were heard all over the hall from the moment it started till it ended. No wonder people say ‘GIRL POWER!’ Put all the girls together, and the world will be impacted! Go Girls!!!!!!!!!!

There were also 8 teams in the Ladies category, and were divided into 2 groups as well. All preliminary matches were played in round robin system. Each match was 8 minutes. Contact Sugar was drawn into Group B, and played against Frontliners Fury, MGS Violets and Innebabes. (Group A comprised USM UniHawks, Frontliners Inferno, MGS Edna Modes and FGA E&P)

Sugar! Sweet Ants...(except the one guy in the middle)

Contact Sugar’s first match was against Frontliners Fury. As usual, Team Contact was a slow starter. Thus the first match became a warm up match for the Sugar! Not too good a game as it ended with a draw of 1-1. The second match was against MGS Violets. The Sugar knew they had to take advantage of the inexperience players from MGS Violets in order to gain another step towards getting into the semis. The match ended with a win in favor of Sugar, 2-0. The final preliminary match was against Innebabes. A win will push Sugar to the top of the table whilst a lost will disqualify Sugar indefinitely. But it was a draw and it took Sugar to the 2nd placing in Group B, which would ended up meeting USM UniHawks who won all the preliminary matches and top the table of Group A. It did not look very promising for Sugar to beat UniHawks and qualify for finals as the latter had won all the preliminary matches. It was definitely a tough match for Sugar. Nevertheless, Sugar fought its way strategically through and gave a full pressure to the game. With all their heart and might, and also a little defensive error from the UniHawks , Sugar won with a narrow score of 1-0. With that, Sugar met Innebabes again in the final match. Although both were rooting for the gold, favor was definitely on Sugar’s side as they managed to seal the victory and bring home the gold! Victory is definitely sweet as this was the first time ever that the girls in Team Contact did such a great job, with great results!

Girls Floorball Family!

All Star Players in Ladies Category went to Sarah (USM UniHawks), Valerie (Innebabes), Penny and Sheryn(Contact Sugar)!

Now…Meet the Army, Driver and Safari!
Yes, 3 more ant species invaded the court a week after the U-14 and Ladies Floorball Tournament. Army, Driver and Safari were ants united to play in the Open category.
There were a total of 15 teams in the Open category, thus the teams were divided into 3 groups. The catch of this category is that only one national capped player is allowed to play on court at any one time. The rule obviously did not favor Contact much since the Club comprises quite a number of national capped players. With that we had to even out the strength of the teams. Anyway, we had only one goal in mind: TO HAVE FUN!! ("My personal believe is that when one is having fun in what he/she is doing, excellence will take its course!" - Penny)

Safari comprised of Fox (first time goalie but excellent spirit!), Kim Beng (Captain a.k.a first time playing in tournament), Joseph, Ian, Isaac Ang, Ben Lim and Sheryn. It was encouraging to watch them play as they put in every bit of their energy to play a good game. Fox, being a first time goalie did very well in defending the goal. Very spirited indeed! Verdict: Did not qualify for the 2nd round, and did not end last! Good team to work on!!

Drivers comprised Edward, Penny, Wai Kit, Ben Ong, Sunn, Calvin Lawrence (Goalie), were drawn into the so-called ‘group of death’. Most of the teams in the group were supposedly to be the stronger teams, such as Ztec 8cers, Dalat, Minden UnderDawgs and Z4(Ztec also). Verdict: We did not fair very well, lost 2 games, drew 1 game and won 1 game. That certainly did not qualify us for the 2nd round.

Army comprised Kenny, James, Bryan, Nicholas, David, Kai Sheng and Joshua Lim (Goalie) was the only Contact team that shone throughout the tournament. They fought their way through all the games, went into 2nd round, met their toughest opponent , ended in penalty shoot-outs and verdict: EMERGED CHAMPION for the Z’Liners-PFA Floorball Tournament! Bryan and Nicholas had the super-combo passes and shots; ... and David was the super-defender of the day! It was a glorious win and a time for celebration!!!!

Playing and Competing

I remember many years ago, there was a certain badminton player who was extremely good and had the skills to be a champion. He even won some major badminton championship titles. However, the world titles that he won was always played on home ground. Whenever he went abroad to compete, he came back empty handed or less than that which was expected of him. He thus earned the title "Jaguh Kampung"!

There is obviously a difference between being able to play well and being able to compete at a high level competition where external pressures haunt the inner being of the sportsman. These "ghosts" seek to inflict fear, doubt, a lack of self-confidence, insecurity, and many more negative feelings and emotions that cripple an athlete's performance. The mind that controls all the sensors that allows an athlete to compete is now focused on other distractions. Sometimes an athlete may not even realise that this is happening to him/her. On other occasions, by the time the athlete realises such a thing is happening, it is too late. Game Over! Heads down. Major loss.

I believe that one key ingredient that takes a good player to another level and allows him/her to compete is the development of the mind. Mental strength is the turbo thrust to a person's performance in the game. The ablility to objectively identify and deal with everything that is thrown at a person including feelings, emotions and even physical setbacks; and harness strength from it at game time is the booster to a great performance.

My response to the recent outing of the national floorball team to Australia? We have good players but we were unable to compete. Mental strength was lacking in the games. What makes a person put his head down when entering the rink as opposed to lifting his head up high ready to face his opponents come what may? The ability to draw strength from the inner being. The ability to mentally take the negative that is out there and overcome it; never allowing it to change or disturb the player at any given time. That, was lacking.

Having said that, it is obvious that the preparation for the next outing has to start with the mind. Every drill, every physical activity, every training session and every game has to begin with a right attitude. Solid mental strength will be the cutting edge!

So, prepare yourselves... to Compete!

What some said about the Sabah Tour

Chang Sunn Huey:
It was really a privilege for me to be able to take a ‘tour’ to KK as part of Team Contact. At first, I thought that KK trip is all about playing floorball and having friendly with the teams over there but later on was informed that it is a ‘MISSION TRIP’! And we are going there to bless them, to help them in developing their skills and game standard. Whoa…so mentally I’ve prepared myself to adapt to the BUSY schedule that have already sent to me and NO DOUBT, once we touched down in KK we had a game immediately!
For the next few days our daily routine is basically eat, fellowship, play floorball and sleep. But what is more important is that God is really good that even in our super jam packed schedule; we all have fun and fellowship more than tiredness! CORRECT? And now I believed that the members of Team Contact are closer than ever and we know each other better in every single way. On the other hand, I/we have learnt from the people in Sabah more than what Team Contact is able to teach them. Not talking about floorball but about the attitude to serve God and the hospitality. I am so blessed that so much have been learnt from the people and the church (D’Stream) over in KK in just a few days and I’m looking forward to visit them again!

Calvin Tan:
Sabah was a fun and exciting trip….I learned that life in Sabah was more interesting than life in Penang and a lot more easier.=P In Sabah we had to rush around to find time to hit our targets as the days went by and it was not easy!! We had at least 5 minutes per person just to bathe…. Although we were all not that clean, we still achieved our target to take a quick shower and come down to the lobby to meet up at exactly the right times. Activities in Sabah were fun and exciting especially the Snorkeling part!! The corals in Sabah were so beautiful! The people in Sabah…..yea, they were the most friendly group I’ve ever met in my life! They were so dedicated I mean… like…. WOW!!! =D Two Thumbs up!! I also got an opportunity to get to know my teammates more which I never knew much about like Kai Sheng and his sister Sophia and get to know new friends from Sabah.. I learnt that living life in ministry to God isn’t always a bed of roses… well, there are some hard times and some good times.. the hard times I would say was to have to endure the tight schedules we had and the good times were when all of us shared jokes, laughed and played together in floorball matches which really revealed our true selves to the people around us and also sharing our knowledge to the Sabah floorball teams. =] Well, this is all I have to say….for now… =P
I MISS SABAH!!!!! xD

Sophia Lim:
The day came and we reached the Penang airport at 8.15 am, 15 minutes earlier than the appointed time. I was actually quite bored and lonely and wondered whether this trip will be boring for me since I don’t really know most of them well enough. I’ve never talked to some of them before. But after a while, it was actually very fun. I sat beside Nicholas on the plane whereas my brother sat with Eythan. Nicholas shared a lot of the fun and excitement that he had during his school life with me. We didn’t sleep when we were on the plane. I thought I would be extremely tired for not sleeping in the plane and also for not having enough sleep the night before. I want to praise God again for providing me with enough strength to continue my day.
Firstly, I would like to thank Shawn of Team Nomad for giving us a ride to our hotel. Then we got ourselves ready for the match against Team Reloaded. At night, we had referee course conducted by Uncle James which helped me understand more about floorball.
The next day, I thought I woke up quite late because the sun was so bright but it was actually still very early in the morning. So we got ready to go to Manukan Island. We walked to the jetty to take a boat ride to the island. This was the best Saturday that I had throughout this year. I saw lots of fishes and corals, enjoyed God’s creation and realized how wonderful our God is. It’s a very nice place to visit. The sea is crystal clear. After snorkeling, we went to the Philippine market to buy some souvenirs for our friends but it was very expensive. At night, we had another friendly match against the Team Nomad. All of them are runners and some of them are even hockey players. So the second day ended.
On Sunday, we went to D’Stream Anglican Church for service. I love how the pastor preached and learned a lot from him actually. After the service, we had to get ready for our friendly matches against the Sabah floorball teams. Throughout the game, I learned how to cooperate with my teammates. I found out that communicating with them is not that hard after all. After this trip, I had learned a lot from them especially my teammates and the people in Sabah as well. I would like to express my gratitude to Shawn and his team for providing us with everything that we need such as accommodation and transportation. I enjoyed this trip the most. Praise the Lord that everything ran smoothly and safely.

Bryan Looi:
My trip to Sabah was one filled with fun experiences. Firstly, the most shocking thing in Sabah was staying with Uncle Pastor Coach Edward [a.k.a No.1] Haha, it wasn’t shocking to me, but everyone else. I had already guessed who was going to be put in the same room with him and that was either: Eythan, Joseph or me. Anyway, the most FUN experience I had in Sabah was going to Pulau Manukan.
I was very excited when we got there because we got to snorkel. It was very, very fun when we were there. One thing I learnt when we were there was that Linken couldn’t swim!!! Now to floorball, we had Floorball Non-Stop. [Contact stole this phrase from me!] We played a total of 5 games in 3 days. It was quite tiring indeed and it paid off as we only drew one and won the rest. Coming to the not so good things of the trip, we were only allowed to bath for 5-10 minutes at certain times. We were also required to wake up earlier than usual and sleep rather late. [These were required to keep in line with our tight schedule] I have learnt many things during this trip, and one being ‘Time Management’. We really had to manage our time carefully because our schedule was very tight.
Lastly, I would just like to thank the Nomad Floorball Club for providing our transport, taking us to the games and to the ‘kopitiams’. Many thanks also to the D’Stream Church members for accommodating us.

Penny Khoo:
This is my 4th time in Sabah, and I still haven’t got a chance to climb Mount Kinabalu. Apparently it was fully book. I thought this trip would be the trip where I could have a taste of what it is like to be up in the altitude. Oh well, I guess I will only get to do it the next trip, ‘hopefully’! But I must admit, it was the best trip ever to Sabah. It was truly ‘floorball non-stop’ as quoted by a dear teammate. We could really draw many lessons out from this trip, from the technicality of floorball to spiritual stuff as mentioned by the others. As for me, I’m just thankful for the time spent out of the floorball rink with each and every one of them. A time to just chill out; laugh with (and at) one another. I’m thankful for each and every unique person in the team. I’m reminded of the reason behind the existence of Team Contact and where we are heading - the place where people, precision, and performance connect. While we believe that in a game “every inch counts” and “every shot matters”, we also believe that every person is important. That is why team dynamics is crucial in the club. We strive to be the best because we believe in the people! Yes, the team has definitely grown so much closer and stronger! And we are an inch closer to be the best that we can be!! ...321-CONTACT!!!

Also, I’m thankful for Team Nomads and D’Stream folks for their great hospitality! Great is perhaps an understatement…it was AWESOME! Thank you for hosting us and making our stay a truly pleasant one!!

Team Contact Sabah Tour

It was a privillage for members of Team Contact to be be able to take a Floorball Tour to Kota Kinabalu, Sabah from the 3-9 July. The team that went to KK consisted of a total of 16 players; 7 players from FireAnts2008, 7 from the Bullets2008, together with Sam Yeoh (also known as Uncle Sam) and Lin Ken who were also with the team to contribute to the referee and goalkeeper clinics.

Day 1: Thusday 3 July
The team went to KK in 3 batches with Edward going in first on 1 July not for floorball but to take his Open Water Dive Certification. Penny, Kenny, Sam and Linken arrived on the 3rd and it was then that the floorball sessions began. The first session focused on individual skills. For the players, greater emphasis was on passes and shots while there were also some time devoted to dribbling and spinoffs. Goal keepers were also given personal attention in the areas of movement and positioning. As usual, after a time of personal skill development, we got ourselves into groups for a time of fun and games.

Day 2: Friday 4 July
It was this day that the fun really began, as the bulk of the team arrived. It was a rather hectic first day for most of the team as they arrived in the afternoon, went straight for lunch, and then to a friendly game with Team Reloaded. Edward was still under the sea for the final day of his course and joined us immediately after his certification.

The game was held in Shan Tao, the home ground of Team Reloaded which housed 4 badminton courts. Team Contact started off with our usual sluggish play which did not really pick up at all throughout the day. Everyone was just tired and trying too had to perform in a new environment. Team Contact still managed to beat Team Reloaded 7-5, and after that game we decided to relax a bit more, not stress ourselves to perform, and have more fun while playing.

Day 2 did not end there but after a quick shower, we were rushed to D'Stream for the Referee's Clinic. James being the IFF certified referee conducted the course. It was also good for the team as many in the team were not exposed to what is required of referees. The participants also got a drilling on the rules of the game. Althought it was somewhat rushed, most of the material was covered and the participants were challenged to practice what they had heard in the coming days.

Day 3: Saturday 5 July
The day began early again for us as we headed off for breakfast and then walked to the Jesselton Jetty to catch a boat to Manukan Island. It was a free and easy morning but more importantly it was a time for the team to gel together and have fun. And there was certainly lots of fun as true colours off the court came flourishing forward. Although we started off with the intent to have fun snorkling, it did not end up as the main thing as there were other areas that got us talking and we got to know each better.We headed back just before lunch and took a quick stroll at the Philippino Market for those who wanted to get some suveniors.

After a quick lunch it was floorball clinic time again. This time the clinic was firstly focused on the movement of referees. This was a continuation of the course conducted the previous day. While Team Contact came up with mock situations on court, the referees were "tested" on their movement and decision making. The session took about an hour before we moved on to the players. We then conducted a session on team tactics. As time was not on our side, we only focused a little on movement and then taught on taking free hits. We also took the opportunity to show the KK players the FireAnts set piece so that they could take some ideas from that and develop something original for themselves.

"Floorball non-stop" as one of our players put it. We were at SM All Saints, the homeground of Team Nomads for a friendly game at night. We started off by demonstrating to them our warm up drills and then the games began. Team Nomads had both their teams combine together, the All Saints and Ravens each taking one line. The All Saints lineup played well and were very quick. Much potential there. It was a very good and enjoyable game I believe to both parties concerned. After a game of 2 periods, the score ended with a score of 6-3 to Team Contact.

Day 4: Sunday 6 July
The day began with the team going to church in the morning. Edward went to BCCM Rainfield while the rest of the team went to D'Stream. After the service we went back to the hotel for a quick change before going for lunch and thereafter to Shan Tao for friendly games with all the KK teams. There were 5 teams present including Team Contact and games were played in a round robin. By this time, the focus was on trainig the referees and enjoying ourselves in the game. As such, FireAnts sat out most of the time to allow the Bullets to have more playtime and training. The highlight of the friendly matches was definately Kai Sheng scoring his very first goal and I think that earned himself a meal at KFC! It was great fun and all enjoyed themselves on court as well as off court with lots of laughter.

The night was filled with more laughter, fun, and fellowship as the team was hosted by D'Stream leadership for a nice buffet dinner. Yummy! After the dinner we had a brief team meeting and debrief of the trip as majority of the team were to leave early in the morning.

Day 5: Monday 7 July
A super early morning as the whole team got up and gathered by 5.15am to send part of the team back to Penang. "Goodbye" and "see you at the next training..." seemed to be the common phrase that morning and soon after we sent the team off, the rest of us went back to bed. Zzzz...
A slow morning after that as we went to the mamak stall for breakfast and after that to the shopping mall. The 7 of us who stayed back ended up watching "Hancock" in the cineplex. Talk about relax...

The night was not as relaxed as we had a clinic for coaches. The clinic started off in an area which the Referees Clinic did not have time to cover and that was in the area of the Secretariat. After about 45 minutes covering the how to's and the job functions of a secretariat, we moved on to the how to of coaching teams. Drills, positioning, defence, attack we just some of the things covered but once again time was not on our side as there was just too much to cover in one session. Well, I guess the KK folks will just have to invite us back again to continue... ;)

Day 6: Tuesday 8 July
Late nights and early mornings was something that we really had to get used to in this trip. 5.15am again... this time to send Sophia and Kai Sheng to the airport and it seemed almost routined already as we went to bed after that and woke up again for breakfast. No movie today but instead we had lunch meetings and fellowships with different people. A quick rest after lunch, a short time of planning and discussion pertaining PFA matters and off to our final clinic in KK. This time it was with Team D'Gap. Basic skills and one final session just playing and having fun together. And after everything was done, over to the famous Damai for supper. The Lamb Chops were super! ;)

Day 7: Wednesday 9 July
Yes! Another day that began at 5.15am, but it is here that we said our final goodbyes and thanks. This trip was not only a learning process for the whole team as there were many things that we took back, but it was also one that was filled with fun and excitement. Getting to know floorballers from a different state also created a bond that we believe will go a long way.
Just a few minutes after checking in, the anouncement came up that the flight will be delayed by half and hour. Well, not something that we wanted to hear as all were eager to get back and make up for the sleep that we lost the whole week. We however have to admit that Airasia did good this time as we arrived 10 minutes before the orginal scheduled time even after the delay!
Thanks again to the Nomads for hosting us. And thanks to all the floorballers in KK that made this trip worthwhile.

It was truly an honor to be able to service them and seeing the members bonding with one another. The telematch games were all geared towards developing a tighter and closer bonding with one another, and also to just chill out, let the hair lose and have fun…lots of fun!

The Moment Everything Happens

Indeed! 7 June 2008 marked yet another day where the moment everything happens…..yes, right smack at Penang Red Crescent Society! It was exhilarating to have two events namely, ‘3v3 Junior Floorball Challenge’ and ‘Play in a Team, Play for Yourself (PTPY)’ running simultaneously. Two courts were set up with one catering to the juniors, while the other catering for the more experienced, seasoned and older players.

Welcome and Briefing Before the Games

There were a total of 7 teams participating in the junior challenge with 4 teams from St. Christopher International School and 3 teams from Contact Floorball School. The juniors definitely had more supporters; with their teachers, parents and families to cheer them on. To give the juniors more play time, the teams were set to play against one another in round robin system. Team Cheetah (St. Christopher) top the table to bring back the Champion’s title. The 1st Runner-Up went to Team Fireball (Contact Floorball School), represented by Ashlynn, Nathalynn, Josiah and Timothy. They played remarkably well, with very good passes, controls and runs. Their only setback was most likely due to their small-framed body. Learning to play harder against the bigger sized boys would definitely help in the game. 2nd Runner-up went to Team Puma (St. Christopher). The junior challenge ended earlier than PTPY. Prizes were given to the top 3 winners while the PTPY participants took their breather before proceeding to their 2nd rounds and finals.

Play in a Team, Play for Yourself (PTPY) is a new and challenging format that was introduced by Contact Sports for the first time. The format is such that each participant was allocated into a group of 6 players and thereafter formed teams to play 3v3 within the group. 3 games were played within the group in different teams and each win will award the players in the team 2 points, while a draw 1 point. The top winners in each group proceeded into next round by forming new groups of 6 players each, and the elimination process continued. This format was introduced with the aim to help each individual to learn to play with different people and with different teams. We had a total of 24 guys and 18 girls participating in PTPY. Some were quite skeptical of playing with people that do not really know while some could not wait to conquer the court. Nevertheless, everyone truly displayed the spirit of sportsmanship. Everyone played well especially the younger ones who started playing not very long ago. They truly outshined the more experienced and seasoned ones…to name a few, Kai Sheng (Contact), Rooban (Innebandy! CO) and Win Shern (Innebandy! CO). They played harder, fought better and run more than usual. Our salute to these people and we hope to see them rising up to conquer the court soon!

Meridian Junior College Floorball Team Visits Penang.

Although it has been just two weeks since we updated the blog, but it seems longer than that with the busy schedule that we have had. Yes, it is just after two weeks of playing against Nanyang Technological University (Singapore), we had the privilege to play against another floorball team from the Meridian Junior College (Singapore). We truly salute the dedication of the Meridians, who in the midst of preparing for their exam, were also preparing and training hard for the upcoming interschool floorball tournament, supposedly to be one of the very important and prestigious tournaments in Singapore.

After the Penang girls debut appearance in the friendly against National University of Singapore (NUS) last year, we had the opportunity once again to play in an all girls team against the Meridian girls. Proud to say, there were 16 of us including goalie (that made up 3 full lines!) Team Contact managed to field 4 girls, Sheryn, Hai Chin, Sophia Lim and Penny.

We played 4v4 with a smaller size court, as it was the request of the Meridians who were preparing for their upcoming tournament. Even with a smaller size court, we knew it would not be an easy game for the Penang girls as many are still very new to the game. Surprisingly, it took the Meridian girls quite a long while before they found the back of the net and scored their first goal. Needless to say, it was our very own defensive error. First period ended with the Meridians leading 1-0. Knowing that we did not have much to show in terms of skills, we know that if we were to play a little harder, more aggressive and run a whole lot more, we do have quite a fair chance of winning the game. With some adjustment to the line-ups, and a little bit more ‘oomph’ to our spirit, we managed to score our first goal to give them a draw. But in less than 5 seconds, when our first line changed, the Meridians scored another goal to give them a lead. End of second period, 2-1. The final period proved to be tiring for the Penang girls due to lack of stamina. However, with a little more movement and passes, we managed to score another goal. With that the game ended with a draw of 2-2, bringing smiles to the Penang team. However, we could have done better!

The boys however did not fair as well. Playing 4v4 in the first period and 5v5 in the second, the boys lost their game 2-5. The lost was mainly due to defensive and goalkeeping errors. The boys also had some problems in the mid section of the rink and were not able to move the ball up. Well, the state has many good players but we must admit that we have not developed ourselves to be a strong team yet. With the intensity of trainings picking up, we can only get better! Team contact were represented by Kenny, JinKeet, WaiKit, Bryan, Nick, Sunn, BenOng, Calvin, KaiSheng, and Joshua. Edward did not play as he was coaching the team.

Meeting Jani Kukkola

Last Saturday we had the opportunity to meet Jani Kukkola at a floorball clinic. Jani plays in the national league in Finland as well as for the Finnish national team. A young player with great skills. Though his stay in Penang was very short and our meeting even shorter because of my tight schedule, yet there was some time between drills and play to connect and network. A good time to build friendship with another person in the floorball world. Hopefully we will be able to connect with even more floorballers from the great floorball nations in the future.

NTU Visits Penang

With the request of Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore to play both Team Contact and Team Innebandy! CO, we were excited and waited in anticipation for the game held on 24 May 2008 at the Balik Pulau Sports Complex. However, with the lack of time as they were here only for one full day, Contact FireAnts and Innebandy! CO teamed up to play against them so that the ladies and the state team will also get an opportunity to play against NTU.

Both FireAnts and Innebandiens played in their own respective lines. FireAnts fielded in 2 lines of players with Joshua Lim taking his rightful place in front of the goal. For some of the players, it was their first time ever playing in a full size court, and full game of 20 minutes x 3 periods, and also without stoppage of time.

The game started off with the Innebandiens taking the first line, followed by the FireAnts. While most of us were still adjusting to the size of the rink FireAnts conceded the first goal due to defensive error. Everything must have seemed bigger and wider than usual. With the lack of experience playing in an international size rink we were a bit lost in trying to find our positions . We hardly had control of the game for the first period.

However the 2nd and 3rd period proved to be better for us. Finding our positions, our defenses were a little tighter and forwards were taking a whole lot more shots at goal. Although we lost 7-5 when the final whistle was blown, we were satisfied with the achievement of the FireAnts as we managed to score 4 out of 5 goals with the other goal being an own goal by an NTU player.

Overall, FireAnts played hard and played well as a team. Credit goes to these people who scored….Calvin #7 (1 goal), Edward #2 (2 goals) and David #28 (1 goal)! Two thumbs up!!

Later at night, the Penang girls/junior players played against the NTU girls followed by Penang guys against NTU guys. Penang girls junior players lost to NTU with a score of 4-1 while the guys lost to NTU with a score of 2-1.

The aim of the friendly matches were to gain experience, exposure and also to work towards developing a better team. It was also good to establish friendships and we are looking forward to meeting them again in the rink.

Youthwave Triple Challenge

Once again, Contact Sports had the privilege to service Youthwave by coordinating the annual Youthwave tournament. Instead of focusing solely on Floorball alone, Youthwave decided to expand their horizon by adding two more sports, Captain Ball and Ultimate Frisbee. Thus this year, the mega event is known as YOUTHWAVE TRIPLE CHALLENGE 2008! The additional sports were introduced with the aim to provide a bigger platform for more young people to be involved in sports.

The Youthwave Triple Challenge was held on 19 April 2008 at Balik Pulau Sports Complex and unexpectedly drew overwhelming responses from various churches, schools, organizations and clubs. There were a total of 48 teams for all the sports. Floorball Men (16 teams), Floorball Ladies (10 teams), Captain Ball (18 teams) and Ultimate Frisbee (4 teams)! All these were represented by:-

All the 3 sports were played simultaneously. Floorball was played in the indoor stadium while both Captain Ball and Ultimate Frisbee were played at the field. The weather was quite bearable during first part of the day; just a little sun/heat to give an extra oomph to those playing outside. However, it started to pour quite heavily at about lunchtime. We had to very quickly reorganize and place the Captain Ball games into the indoor stadium. Most were thankful for the rain as the heat outside was beginning to take a toll on the participants. As for Ultimate Frisbee, the teams had to wait for the rain to subside before playing their final game.

It was quite a tiring day for all. Towards the end of the Challenge, many players were seen having cramps. It was definitely a sign of the players playing with all their might and strength and their utmost best to win the Challenge Trophy.

All in all it was a great day of fellowship, and not forgetting true sportsmanship! The Challenge could not have been possible if not for these various people who stepped in to lend their helping hands…Here’s our deepest appreciation to them for their generous contribution…

It was a surprise to most of us, but excitement filled the air as smses were sent back and forth concerning the article that appeared in The Star yesterday (18 April 2008) which featured the recent Penang Floorball League and a full blown picture of the FireAnts with their medals and trophy. "How many copies of the newspaper did you buy?"... Well, most of the team members had at least one copy to savour but a few in the team bought more than that to send the article to family and friends who don't get the northern version of The Star. Minden UniHawks and Frontliners Spartans had the privilege to play the very last match of Division-1 and end the Penang Floorball League 2008! What an honor to have so many eyes watching the game. Not forgetting the limelight they were in with the presence of YB Koay Teng Hai, Deputy Minister of the Penang Youth and Sports Ministry as well as reporters and photographer from The Star Newspaper! It was truly an honor to have YB Koay and the The Star representatives with us!!

It was a very important match for 3 teams basically, Frontliners Spartans, Minden UniHawks and Innebandy!CO. A win for Frontliners Spartans would mean the silver medal is theirs to keep. A win for Minden UniHawks would have them redeem their pride after losing the other 5 matches and also a blessing for Innebandy!CO which will then take home the silver. Contact FireAnts were spared from this pressure as we have sealed the victory last Tuesday! A definite relief for all of us! Phew!!

Final result? With nothing to lose, Minden UniHawks rose up to the occasion and fought a good fight on court with a score of 5-3 and gave the silver to the Innebandiens. Many predicted that Frontliners Spartans would have won the game, considering the fact that they were more experienced. But as the saying goes...the ball is round, and you would never know where it would end! On a personal note, Frontliners Spartans had improved much as a team in terms of skills! Keep it up!

And the moment where everyone was waiting for…the speech by the PFA Acting President, Mr. James Looi followed by presentation of medals to the winners and not forgetting, the Challenge Trophy that we, FireAnts have worked very hard for!! It was truly a grand finale and a glorious moment for those in Team Contact! Thank you YB Koay for gracing the occasion and presenting the medals. Thank you supporters and everyone in Contact (be it FireAnts or Bullets)! You all are truly a fiery force to be reckoned with!

Catch Me if You Can!

2 Seconds! That was how long (or should we say, how short) it took for Contact FireAnts to score their first goal against Innebandy!CO. From that point on, we knew that we had to run as fast as we could, and play "Catch me, if you can". That was exactly what the FireAnts did. Playing as one united front, pushing high and looking for goals, we managed to take a 4 goal lead by midway of the first period. Something that everyone did not expect! Innebandy pulled one back towards the end of the first period through a Sam-Deswyn combo to make the half time score 4-1. A scoreline that we were happy with at the end of the first period.

The second period started with the FireAnts pushing again after a good break. Yet again, within the first minute, we managed to put one into the net. And another one by the second minute. "Catch me, if you can!" 6-1 and FireAnts were holding a comfortable lead. However, we also have to be honest that we were really tired with all the running and movement. So, with the comfortable lead, we decided to play more defensively. Knowing that Innebandy was also a tactical team, we had to be very focused. Penny, the FireAnts captain then took the role of line coach to help all stay in focus and to make sure that the lines and changes were strong enough to ward off the Innebandy attack. Innebandy moved the ball around well, pressed hard and scored 2 goals, but unforced errors in front of their goal gave the FireAnts opportunities to take those 2 goals back. And we did! 8-3 victory, and the Division 1 gold medal to Contact FireAnts!

We want to end the league by giving Glory to God! Although Team Contact is made up of people from different faiths, we all acknowledge that there is an Almighty God and that even though we are all made differently with different backgound, personalities, and skills; the Almighty has brought us together into this great team. The unity in the team is great. The fun (and makan) that we have together is great. We love this team! ... 321-CONTACT! *cheers*

Birthday Match!

The FireAnt vs Spartan match (25/3/2008) is deemed to be one of the most crucial matches in the league for Div 1 teams. Everyone knew that the winner would walk away being secured of at least a silver medal and a chance to go for gold. Thus both FireAnts and Spartans knew fully well that it is not match to be taken for granted. If FireAnts win the game, we will be secured with the silver, but if the Spartans win it, the gold would almost be theirs. Therefore every movement and every goal counts! We were determined not to let the Spartans trample us.

The first period started off very well for FireAnts! Despite the hard pressure from Spartans who are well known for their speed, we played a very well controlled game. After several attempts to put in a goal, Edward #2 sealed the first goal at a free hit. A direct shot into the goal! An Awesome Start! One goal means one step closer to victory! And about a minute later, Calvin #7 scored the second goal to bring the score line to 2-0. This would mean another step even closer to victory. However we knew we couldn’t afford to rest in our laurels until the final whistle is blown. That became a reality when the Spartans made a very quick comeback in the middle of the first period scoring 2 goals almost consecutively. But thanks to the father-son combo of James #8 and Bryan #10, we managed to pull one back just before the end of the period.

The second period seems to be slower in its pace as the Spartans did not seem to pressure that high and that gave our defense some room to maneuver. Midway into the second period, Bryan scores again which gave us a 2 goal buffer again. By this time the Frontliners were once again pushing hard to find a goal. 3 minutes to full time, and we get a free hit on our end. Edward walks up to take the free hit and sees Bryan signaling him over the other end, right in front of the Spartans goalmouth. The ball is lobbed and delivered to Bryan who once again did a father-son combo to deliver the ball to James to score. A glorious goal which meant that we just needed to hold the ball and control the game for the remaining minutes, but we later let in a goal which was deflected from a free hit in front of the goal. Final score 5-3 to FireAnts!

In the heat of the game, one cannot deny that there would be some pushing and slashing of sticks. The highlight of the game was when one of the Spartans sent Henry #23 right into the goal! It was hilarious!!! The laughter and cheer from the spectators stand helped ease the tension of the game. Conclusion? It was a glorious match! The best game played by FireAnts so far! Verdict? Not enough goals, too many misses…but we can’t be greedy and securing a medal is definitely a great birthday gift to Edward and Kit Soon!

The Advancing Bullets

The last weekend, Contact Bullets had 3 games almost back to back with them meeting the Trojans on Saturday, Eagles on Sunday and the 8Cers on Tuesday.

The first game against the Trojans was quite an interesting yet frustrating game to watch! Interesting because these two teams are pretty much equal in terms of their experience and skill. In fact these players would most likely be the ones to bring floorball to greater heights in the near future. Frustrating because the game proved to be messy with very few proper passes and proper movements, slow reactions and aimless shooting from both sides. One can almost feel the tensions and frustrations of the coaches from both teams as they screamed their hearts and lungs out. It is obvious the screams weren’t so much for the players’ lack of skill but more so for not listening to instructions. The first period ended with 0-0.

However, the second period proved to be slightly more interesting. There were a whole lot of better passes and movement especially amongst the Bullets. But even with that, the Trojans managed to put in the first goal. But Trojans’ joy was short lived when Ben Ong #22 of Bullets scored a goal about a minute after to give them a draw.

The last 10 minutes proved to be the most exciting! Someone even commented that the game only started in the last 10 minutes! As the clock kept ticking, both teams were trying to outrun and outwit the other. After several attempts, Bullets scored another goal to seal the victory of 2-1. No more pressure at the final whistle. Bullets achieved their goal…to end up 3rd in the table... that's just a better way to say, "not ending up at the bottom of the table." ;)

The other 2 games for the Bullets were against experienced teams, and although it is almost certain that they will not achieve a win in those games, the Bullets are determined not to play a wishy-washy game but to play hard and to their utmost ability. So with the goal set before the league achieved, the Bullets played the remaining 2 games as exposure to developing greater teamwork.

The game against the Eagles was what we expected it to be...lots of shots from them Eagles towards our goal. Nevertheless, the Bullets were determined to move the ball around and pass it as much as they could in order to score. Our goalkeeper was also not in-form that day and let in easy goals and we failed to score. Not our day. The Bullets got a trashing from the Eagles, but also a lot of experience playing with stronger teams as well.

Our final game with the 8Cers was something that the Bullets were looking forward to. Well, for one, it was the final game, and yet is was again an opportunity to display comradeship and further advance in the tacticalities of floorball. The Div 2 positions had more or less been determined already and there was no pressure in both teams in the game. Both teams were playing with lots of passes and movement. A good game to watch but the 8cers obviously had more experience and thus won the game 5-2.

Congratulations to Team Bullets for achieving their goals and advancing in the area of Floorball and Teamwork. Keep the team spirit up and keep floorballing!

Picnic with the Hawks

The game started off like a stroll in the park but ended more like a picnic as the pace was relatively slow. FireAnts were looking for goals early in the game and made some good passes but once again could not find the finishing touch. Although there were many openings made by the FireAnts, we did not find the back of the net. Credit to UniHawks' new keeper Christopher for many saves and keeping the ball out of their net. Despite the number of shots at goal, the first period saw only 4 goals with Contact leading 3-1.

The pace of the second period was even slower as UniHawks decided to play a more defensive game and gave the FireAnt the room to move. FireAnts took the opportunity to move the ball around more and distracted the defence to score more goals. However, there were some good counter attacks coming from the Hawks which resulted in goals as the defence of the FireAnts we slacking once again. We really need to do something about the defence.

Much more shots on goal were taken in this period and credit given to Nicholas, (the unofficial Contact Man of the Match) who took home 5 goals. The rest of the team also doing well in playing their part and contributing to the success. Although the pace was slow and there was the occasional slack in the defence, but with a final score of 10-4, no one's complaining. :) Keep going FireAnts!

We also want to take this opportunity to congratulate Dalat Eagles who won their game earlier in the evening to seal their position as Division 2 Champions! Syabas Eagles! To the other teams in Div2, there is still a fight for the silver medal.

Bullets Crash Again

Last Saturday saw Contact Bullets take a beating from the Eagles. The Eagles started off rather slow with many of the forwards missing many goal opportunities. Bullets also put on a good show by occasionally having good opportunities to attack, but because of the lack of experience did not manage to convert them into goals. The first period ended with the Eagles leading the Bullets just 2-1.

However, it was a different story in the second period. The Eagles found themselves and were attacking a whole lot better shooting in a total of 8 goals. The Bullets did get opportunities as well but managed to convert one on a counter attack. Overall, it was an Eagles dominant game. The speed of the Eagles, and the lack of experience of the Bullets was very clear in the game. Bullets loosing 2-10 when the final whistle was blown.

FireAnts Loose Grip of Top Position

As expected, yesterday's game was fast and furious with FireAnts and Innebandy!CO coming out strong and both teams wanting a win. Labeled by many as the best game in the league so far, the game was filled with good technical play, lots of movement, a very fast pace, and even psychological mind games. From the start of the whistle, the players from both teams came out not only testing the movements of the opponent but also "tested" how strict the referees would be.
It was Innebandy who put the ball into the goal first with the likes of Deswyn who came all the way back from KL jus to play. It was fast turns and a quick shot have Innebandy the heads up. Great play! However, the pace of the game did not slow down with still lots of movement and many shots especially from the FireAnts but we just could not find the back of the net.
The second period started off the the FireAnts pushing very high looking for the equalizer. At one point, Henry managed to put the ball into the goal, but the ball bounced out and was not noticed by both referees. Play on... With the FireAnts pushing high, there was a lack of concentration in the defence and Innebandy managed to score again with an easy goal this time. Once again, FireAnts put the ball into the net, this time with Bryan hitting the ball into the back bar, and once again the ball bounced out and the referee calls "no goal". Play on...for the second time... The FireAnts continued to pressure and had many shots, but once again, could not find the finish and floated most of the shots. Late into the second period, Edward finally responded with a superb goal from the side into the top corner (which the Innebandy coach still claim its a fluke ;) haha...). Innebandy managed to score again after that because of the poor defending from FireAnts.
A clean fast paced game with lots of "real" floorball and the best team for the night won! 3-1 to Innebandy! CO. They now take top position in the table as FireAnts slip down.

Bullets Fall to 8Cers

The game between Contact Bullets and Ztec 8Cers in Division 2 came as no surprise. Ztec being a more experienced team defeated the Bullets 4-1. The game started off quite well for the Bullets although we were shorthanded compared to our previous game. Bullets even managed to score first, but that was the only goal that we mustered in the entire game. The play was tight but after only about 3 minutes into the game, the Bullets lost concentration and was letting the 8Cers run all over them. The Bullets were even rewarded with a penalty shot in the first period, but lack of experience and nervousness took over and we did not manage to convert it. Ztec scored all their goals in the first period.

The second period was more interesting as the Bullets improved on their mistakes and played a whole lot better. Ztec also pressured high looking for more goals in the second period, but it was the Bullets' goalie Lawrence who shone that day. Many shots from the attack of the 8Cers were blocked by the defenders, and the ones that were not blocked were shielded by the keeper. No goals in the second period.

A good show by both teams, as Ztec move closer to the top of the table and the Bullets continue to grow in developing strength in the team. Keep up the good work!

FireAnts and Spartans Battle!

Prior to our game, the Division 2 teams played. It was the first match for Dalat Eagles vs Frontliners Trojans. It was a not a great night to begin with as the Captain of Dalat Eagles, Yeoh Jun Wooi suffered a fall, knocked his head hard on the floor and went into seizure, just 2 and a half minutes into the game. Hence the game was stopped until he was sent to hospital via ambulance. It was great to have Lawrence (goalie for Contact Bullets) a.k.a the trainee nurse around, who immediately attended to Jun Wooi. Obviously not forgetting the others who came to help carry him, and making sure he is alright. He is now resting in hospital, and Team Contact would like to wish him well and hope to see him soon on court again!

The game was delayed but the match between Contact FireAnts and Frontliners Spartans went on to create more excitement, this time in the positive light. With the Spartans victorious win over Innebandy! Co in their previous game, their confidence was boosted and we knew that it would not be an easy game for us. Hence we had to really worked hard and keep the game in control. FireAnts played well as a team in the first period, and took dominance of the game. Our first free hit, which was a set piece that we had worked on, gave us a goal against the Spartans. Thanks to Henry #23. Glorious goal! The subsequent free hit trapped one of the Spartans and got us power play but we were not able to capitalise on it. Nonetheless, 2 more goals were scored by Nicholas #13 and Edward #2 in the first period. Honestly, it was very good play in the first period!

Then came the second period... With the fact that they had nothing to lose, the Spartans charged at every ball that was in our possession. We lost a bit of our "team factor" and our mistakes cost us 2 goals. The final 2 minutes were very intense with both teams charging at each other. Confidence of the Spartans keeper also rose as she had many good saves. The shouts and cheers of supporters added to the excitement and tension of the night! The final whistle was a relief to the FireAnts. Had the game prolonged, there was a high possibility that the Spartans would have overtaken them. Final score, FireAnts beat Spartans 3-2.

Contact Opens Penang League with a Sting!

Contact Bullets had the honor and privilege to kick off the first match of Division 2 in the Penang League 2008. We are indeed proud to have new faces and new blood in our team. Even with that we are determine to make our presence count in this league whether or not we are facing other newbies or the big boys.

The game started off very slow as both teams were equally raw in this game. And a slight mistake cost us a goal half way through the 1st period. That sort of shook the team for a while. There were also a few attempts from the Bullets to garner some goals but failed. It was a tiring first period as the Bullets were trying to get into the game. For most of the players, it was their first ever competition.

The 2nd period marked a faster and more exciting pace. The coach changed the lineup a little to take adventage of the tired Trojans. Both teams were taking shots against one another, hoping to score but favor was on Bullets! The team made an impact by scoring one goal after another. Midway through the second period, the spirits of the Bullets were lifted up and they knew that victory was already theirs. They let in one more goal but it did not matter anymore as victory was already sealed. Final Score 6-2. A great job as the Bullets rose to the occasion!

In Division One, FireAnts opened the league facing off with Minden Unihawks. As in our past experiences, Team Contact has not had a tradition of starting tournaments well, and once again it happened. The FireAnts struggled to get into their grove, and at the same time the Hawks were soaring all over the rink, but unfortunately for them, they did not find their mark. In the end, it was the experience of the FireAnts that eventually proved crucial to seal victory. Unihawks played well, and we expect a tougher match in the return leg. Final score 5-1 to the FireAnts!

PFA League 2008: Fixtures and Results

Finally,the much awaited, the much talked about, the very thing that got everyone excited…. the Penang Floorball League 2008 kicks off today (Saturday, 23/2/08) at Dalat International School. With the growth of floorball in Penang and the vision to develop young blood, the Penang Floorball Association (PFA) decided to introduce 2 divisions in this league. Teams were placed in the 2 divisions based on the number of national capped players, national outing and state outings.

Division 1: Contact Fireants, Minden UniHawks, Frontliners Spartans, and Innebandy! Co
Division 2: Dalat Eagles, Ztec 8cers, Frontliners Trojans, and Contact Bullets

All matches will be played 20 mins x 2 periods and each team will have the chance to play home and away matches. The league will run from 23/2/08 to 5/4/08. So, get excited, come and cheer and be a part of floorball, which is making its’ history in Penang!

This week sets the pace for the beginning of a new version of the Penang Floorball League. As this takes place, Contactsports would like all floorballers to take part in The Floorball Grill!
Each week, for the duration of the league, we will post out a question (located just above the Feedback section on this blog) that is somewhat related to floorball; and all you have to do is email us the answer. The first person to send us the correct answer each week will receive a gift, and the first to get all the answers correct will be eligible for the grand prize. As mentioned in our posting sometime ago, Team Contact will also be known as FireAnts! Although time for preparation is short, yet the whole club is excited to see the impact that the ants will bring this season. The team is expecting great things, but at the same time it realizes that nothing comes easy. There will be great battles in the field, and we have to stick together to make a greater impact.

The team in Division Two will be aptly named Contact Bullets. Named after the Bullet Ant whose bite can send the most macho calling for mummy, this very young team plans to make and impact as well. Will the team be able to put such a sting into the league? If not this year then we are quite certain the bites will get harder by the next year.

Well, we take this opportunity to reveal our new logo for Team Contact and to wish all teams the best in the coming league.

3v3 Floorball Challenge

Contact Sports kicked-off year 2008 with a 3v3 Floorball Challenge, which garnered 16 men’s teams and 7 ladies’ teams. A very remarkable record since floorball made its beginning in year 2003. It is definitely obvious that Penang is making a wave with regards to the growth of floorball.

By 8.15am, there were already players flocking the hall. Some were seen practicing their passes and taking shots at the small goalposts. By 8.45am, the whole hall was pretty much crowded with people and not forgetting the ‘let’s play to win’ spirit. For the first time in the history of floorball (as far as I know), the organizer decided to play a double knock-out instead of the usual league format. This system proved to be more interesting and exciting than the usual. (And of course, if a team keeps winning, then they’ll have their money's worth in joining this tournament.)

With the first whistle being blown, there was basically no sign of silence. Every minute and every second was filled with cheers, shouts and cries of players and supporters. The courts were definitely filled with excitement….and lots of EXCITEMENT!

We saw a few new faces on court, which played relatively well as beginners. However, our hats off Salibandy!Co who came all the way from Selangor just for this tournament! And to make their trip a worthwhile one, they played all the way to be the Champs! Great job! They have improved very much since their last tournament.

Not forgetting our very own boys from Contact who named themselves as ‘Team Alive’ consist of Calvin Tan, Ben Ong, Ben Lim and Eythan Yeoh. They played truly well in this tournament, although they did not make it till the end. THIS team was the ONLY team who won against Salibandy!Co drawing 2-2 and then beating them 2-1 in penalties! AWESOME!

Contact 3-on-3 Challenge Results

Salibandy!Co was the most impressive this day, and although they lost their first game due to penalties, came back to win every game in the losers pool and emerge champion. Runner-Up were Ztec Beta, and claiming the bronze was Ztec Alpha.

In the ladies category, Hailstorm emerged champions while the Silver was taken by (FH)2 who having lost their second game to Hailstorm, also made a come back to the finals to meet them. The Bronze medal went to Blast.

Congratulations to the winners! And for the rest, well done! Keep the floorball spirit up! And see you all in the next competition!

Mascot for Contact Floorball Club

As of this year 2008, Contact Floorball Club will have the fire ant as its mascot. We chose the fire ant because it has characteristics that will be upheld by members of Team Contact. Here are some of them:

Strength:
They are one of the strongest animals on Earth, with the ability to lift a seed five times its weight. Elephants are only able to lift objects one fifth their weight.
As such, we in team contact will make it a priority to develop and exercise our physical strength in the game.

Teamwork:
There are more than a million different kinds of insects in the world, most of them solitary insects. Fire ants are social insects. They live in communities and depend on one another to gather food, help build the nest, raise and care for their young, and protect themselves from enemies.
As there is support within their colony, there will also be great support in Team Contact. We exist for the team!

Organization:
Fire ants are extremely organized. Every fire ant has a job to do. They go about their job day after day, never stopping.
Young fire ants help the queen deliver her eggs and tend to the larvae.
Tunnel diggers dig new tunnels as the population grows, making room for increased traffic and new rooms for eggs and larvae.
Guard fire ants stay near the entrance of the mound, blocking strangers from entering.
Winged male and female fire ants go on mating flights in the spring and summer and start new colonies.
And foragers, the oldest of the colony, search for food.
Every player in Team Contact will be trained and groomed to take on specific roles and we will do our job with excellence. We seek that each player excels in our position during the game.

Individuality:
Fire ants are small, only about 1/8 to 1/4 inch long but the variation in size is a distinguishing feature of a fire ant colony. Many other ant species are uniform in size.
We are proud that Team Contact comes in various shapes and sizes (literally). From young players, beginners, to those who are in the national team, and even those belonging to the "fat man's club"; We Welcome All!

Aggression:
Fire ants are known for their lively and aggressive behavior, swarming over anyone or anything that disturbs their nest, often attacking wild animals, baby animals, pets or people, in some instances, even killing them.
We do not plan on killing anybody, but we will however defend our territory with aggression during the game. Step into the shooting zone and we will take you out!

The Killer Sting:
The most significant problem associated with fire ants is their stinging behavior. The ants are very aggressive and will readily attack anything that disturbs their mound. After firmly grasping the skin with its jaws, the fire ant arches its back as it inserts its rear-end stinger into the flesh, injecting venom from the poison sac. It then pivots at the head and typically inflicts an average of seven to eight stings in a circular pattern. Fire ant venom is unique because of the high concentration of toxins, which are responsible for the burning pain characteristic of fire ant stings. Thus, the name fire ants.
Our offence will be as high intensity as our defense. A person who steps on a fire ant mould has approximately 15 seconds before he is swarmed and stung repeatedly. We will make it a point to attack repeatedly with sharp, swift and accurate shots to the backnet of the opponent's goal.

With that, Team Contact will also be known as FireAnts!

Homeschooler Kids Visit Floorball School

On the lovely afternoon of 14 Dec 2007, about 12 homeschooling kids joined our kids’ floorball school. With additional kids who were first timers to floorball, the school was run a little different from usual. The kids were taught first of all how to hold the sticks properly with simple ball control as well as passes. The kids seemed to enjoy moving the balls around and bumping into one another while learning to control the balls. With some knowledge of that, we did a little bit more difficult and fun stuff where all kids would enjoy. Actually, even adults enjoy this: TAKING SHOTS AND MORE SHOTS INTO GOAL!

Later on, the kids were divided into two groups, boys and girls respectively for a mini dribbling pass the cones competition. The boys won the first round. However, the girls bucked up the second time round. In the same group, they played 6 vs 6 with a mini goalpost. For beginners they were considered pretty good as they learned to pass the ball a bit more than those seasoned adult players =) As usual girls are a little bit more passive compared to the guys. Nathalynn (8) from Contact Floorball School faired very well during playtime. She took a very nice shot from the side and helped the girls scored a goal. A glorious goal indeed! But then….the boys ended the game with a score of 3-1.

“It was a great afternoon with a great game”, expressed by one of the homeschool kids. WE certainly hope to have them more often in our school and have more people playing, sleeping and breathing floorball. ;p

Yup, Order anything you want for free! And you can queue up as many times as you want... yummy!

We discovered this when we were taking a break during the APAC Floorball Championships just strolling in the shopping mall just opposite where the team put up in Summer Traven. Promoters just approached us to ask us to queue up for our free drinks. Surprise! Starbucks were doing a promotion in aid of the Salvation Army and we had a wonderful treat. Bryan could not believe his ears.., and eyes and kept asking if it was really true...until he held his Mocha in his hand. Too bad we had only one helping as we wanted to head to the sports hall to watch the floorball games as well. If not for wanting to support our very own Malaysian referees who were on duty, I am sure we would have gone back for more. ;)

For all you guys who missed it...well, perhaps next time...

PFA-Singapore Floorball Tour

After APAC, the Penang Team stayed back to have some friendly games with Singaporean teams for greater exposure. We had 5 games altogether within a span of 2 days, namely against Team Pasirian, NUS Titans, NUS girls, NUS-A and NUS-B.

Asia Pacific Floorball Championships 2007

This year the Asia Pacific Floorball Championships (APAC) proved to be much more exciting than the previous year as there were more teams participating. With Japan back in the picture and dark horses Korea, the level of intensity in the games were much higher and more exciting. Of course, not to mention the presence of the Singapore team which always has a lot to show.

The Malaysian team is a very young team with only 6 or 7 players with international experience. However, we in Penang are proud to mention that more than half of the squad are made up of players that are registered to Penang clubs. Team Contact was represented by 4 players, possibly the highest number from any club in Malaysia.

Players aside, the Malaysian team started off with a rather slow start losing 8:2 to Singapore B on the first day of competition. Although the scoreline was something that was not favourable, yet we have to admit that we were not really a team then. We had not come together to train and it was a struggle to get into pace in our first outing.

The next day was a lot better considering the fact that we were facing Japan B. The Japanese teams were known for their speed, and it was true that we had a lot of "catching" up in the game. However, the Malaysian team showed the spirit and played well only losing to Japan B with a score of 6:3.

The next day was the best for the Malaysian team. We played well, fought hard and had a very sweet victory of beating Australia A with a score of 7:5. This was something that not many people expected and was probably the best thing that has happened to Malaysian floorball since its conception. Everyone in the team including the supporters were filled with joy after the win. A win that will carry us a long way.

With that big win did not manage to push us up the table much as we had inferior goal difference and thus had to battle out at the bottom of the table for the 7th/8th placing with Australia B which we lost 6:3

Overall, we must say that this outing was a challenge for us to put aside our personal agenda and put the team first. Representing Malaysia is an honour and that honour will carry us to bring floorball to a greater height in the the Malaysian scene. We are sure that this team will be the ones who will thrust Malaysian floorball to a whole new level. Malaysia Boleh!!!

IFF Coaching and Referee Seminar

Once again the International Floorball Federation (IFF) together with the Singapore Floorball Association organized the Coaching and Refereeing Seminar during the Asia Pacific Floorball Championships (APAC). This year the Seminar was held at the beginning of APAC instead of the end unlike last year. Participants from Malaysia were our very own Edward, Penny, and James (all three representing the Penang Floorball Association); Dennis and Suresh (representing the Selangor Floorball Association); and Jason Selva also from Penang.

James and Suresh attended the Refereeing Seminar and they teamed up at the end of the seminar to referee in one of the games in APAC. It was a great experience and exposure for the both of them as they teamed up together for the first time. Even greater the experience for James as this was the first time he has refereed in an international floorball game.

Except for Penny who attended the Organisation Seminar last year, this was the second IFF Coaching Seminar for the rest of us. A very good refresher for all of us as this year the seminar proved slightly different as it was a little more tactical in it's approach and thus, very beneficial to all of us.

Penny is the only person who has attended 2 faculties in the Seminar, namely Coaching and Organization. Perhaps the challenge for her is to attend the Refereeing one next year. ;)

A Stunning Night!

The long awaited night has finally arrived! 4th November 2007 at KL Performing Arts Centre, all the nominees and invited guests were stunningly dressed in black and white for the AYA Dream Malaysia Awards. It was quite a glamorous night filled with dance and song performances by ACTS dancers, KL Young Singers, Mia Palenci, Beautiful Gates and many more.

The results?! YouthMalaysia.Com took home the pewter ‘durian’ award. Indeed they were the more deserving winner of the award for their contribution towards the youth of Malaysia. However, we were very glad and truly honored to be one of the shortlisted nominees for the Youth Friendly Company Award. Many asked what did we get for being nominated….oh well, we took home an acrylic ‘durian’ as a gift. But most of all, listening to the many stories and the origin of this award, we took home a greater sense of wanting to sow into the lives of young people, for the betterment of future and of Malaysia.

After 3 years of introducing floorball to the folks in Kota Kinabalu (KK), we finally see progress and passion taking its place in the land. Our recent trip to KK on 25th October 2007 was pretty fruitful and rewarding. Highlights of our 1-week stay at KK…..

Kids’ Clinic (26 Oct)
We had approximately 40 kids come to this intro and clinic where basic ball handling was introduced to them. And of course, there was…GAMETIME! (Possibly the most exciting time in the clinic for a all of them!) They were divided into few groups according to their ages, and played a 4v4 with a small goalpost. Awesome time!

Youth Clinic (26 Oct)
Only an hour after the kids were dismissed, the Youth Clinic began…. We had a short time giving some tips to the goalies, then a simplified clinic was conducted due to space and time constraint. Basic ball handling, passes and different techniques of shooting were taught. No game time for the youth as we were more technical in this session and allowed more time for Q&A. Inter-Church Floorball Tournament (27 Oct)
The tournament was held at Shan Tao Hall, which housed 4 badminton courts. Awesome! The tournament was played in the format of 4v4 with a small goalpost as there were not enough goalies in KK. The scenario was pretty much the same like when Penang first started floorball. A lot of beginners, but all played their hearts out to win the tournament. Edward was the referee throughout the tournament. We saw a few good plays and some potential players who will be able to take the sport to greater heights! Grace Chapel emerged champion for the tournament, followed by Nomad Floorball Club and Skyline. It was great fun for everyone, especially those who have not been playing for some time. Additional Clinic (31 Oct)
With the heat of floorball over the weekend, the KK folks planned an additional session which was not in the original schedule. Those who were hungry for more of floorball came back. We did more stuff this time round being more technical and even had some fun teaching them how to fall properly as well. Some of the girls were too shy to “roll over”.

Game Time! (31 Oct)
After the clinic (and dinner, of course!), we were taken to another hall for a game! In total we visited 4 halls in KK. All of them are very nice place to play in. Smooth flooring, which is something very scarce in Penang. Anyway, this time round we had the chance to play with the locals. Great time! Great fun!

Apart from all the physical sessions we did, we also had the opportunity to meet with the leaders. We are grateful for the opportunity to impart the vision of developing floorball as a sport for the state. With the vision caught by the leaders, and passion instilled upon them, we trust floorball will also grow in magnitude in KK! And for us in Penang…. We can’t wait for an invitation to go and play with them in the future!

* It’s not all work, we had some fun time too at Manukan Island. Wanted to go up Mt. Kinabalu too but was fully booked. Perhaps the next time we go as a team, we will conquer Kinabalu as well. ;)

Unleashed Sports Camp

YAY! The camp finally came to reality after a long postponement. The camp was originally scheduled in March school holiday but was postponed to 13-15 October due to lack of responses. Targeted at Christian leaders who are passionate about sports, the camp was held at Chefoo Methodist Centre, Cameron Highlands. It was a very nice campsite (great environment, cool weather, and good food). And the plus point for this camp? We had Awesome Fellowship, Great Discussions, and Loads of Fun!

The camp kicked off with a great teambuilding activity. It caused some to feel uneasy about certain things that they needed to do in order to complete the activity but it certainly served as a good icebreaker. After that, there were lots of fun stuff that we did throughout the camp which came in the form of theoretical and practical sessions.

We are truly thankful to God for His divine blessing and favor upon the camp. For without Him, it would not have been possible in having the camp. We trust that many who attended the camp had been empowered by the Holy Spirit and unleashed to do so much more for the building of God’s Kingdom through sports ministry!

Are You Running the Right Race?

Life is like a race! Everyone is involved in some form of race. Students strive to be straight A’s achievers. Working adults in the corporate world are into running the rat race. Everyone wants to be first in many ways. Some termed this wanting as ‘kiasu’ (in hokkien). In literal translation, it simply means ‘scared to lose or fail’. ‘Kiasu’ is a post modern disease where one tries to outdo one another; and everyone gets stress up by not having their wants met, and their positions secured. It’s about being at the very top that matters! Really?! Think about it…

Anyway, following the craze of The Amazing Race by AXN, Youthwave Penang organized its’ own version of THE RACE on 8 September 2007. Once again, Contact Sports had the privilege to be at the service of Youthwave Penang. THE RACE was targeted at those 13 years to 25 years of age. Each team comprised 4 participants of mixed gender, with one being the driver.

THE RACE was organized NOT with the aim of getting teams to just outdo one another, being at the top at the expense of others, but learning activities were incorporated into each station. There were a total of 10 destinations, spread out all around the Penang Island. Teams had to travel in their own respective cars to get to each destination, except for one destination whereby two in a team had to flag down a trishaw while the other two traveled using their very own legs to get to Little India.

Teams had to go through physical challenges such as canoeing; mental challenges such as memorizing Braille within a span of 20-30 minutes and putting it into practice by deciphering the clues in Braille while being blindfolded as well as emotional challenges such as trusting fellow team mates to give proper instructions while searching for clues in the swimming pool and being blindfolded at the same time. Many other fun activities were also included such as locating a tombstone. Did I say fun? ;) … and running into hypermarts and purchasing items to be given to charitable organizations. A short debrief were conducted at the end of THE RACE to challenge the participants to “run the right race”.

And the prize….. *drum roll…..ta-daa* RM100,000??? …But THE RACE was definitely not about money and the bling-bling! It was about coming together as a team and working hand-in-hand to achieve a common goal. It was about understanding life as a race, persevering through difficulties and learning to make good choices. However, we are proud to have very generous sponsorships from THE CARNIVALL WATER THEMEPARK, GOLDEN SCREEN CINEMAS and EXTREME CONCEPT HAIR SPECIALIST. These people ran with us to make THE RACE looked great! Awesome!!

Tribute to our Goalies

This is a blog specially dedicated to our Goalies, namely THUM YUNG MING (Contact X) and JOSHUA LIM (Contact Y) for their splendid performance and goal-saving during our recent participation in the Dalat Floorball Challenge.

For without them, we could have lost! Well, we could have also lost quite terribly BUT they saved the day! Your excellent moves and goalkeeping truly made us proud!

It has been noted (not only by our team) that these 2 goalies performed extremely well during the tournament. In fact, someone even said that Yung Ming should be awarded the player of the tournament for his efforts.

We want to say that you guys are a gem to Team Contact. Hey people, 3 cheers for our goalies! *Hip! Hip! Hurray!, Hip! Hip! Hurray!, Hip! Hip! Hurray!!!*

Dalat Floorball Challenge

The battle of the best is ON again with the recent Dalat Floorball Challenge held on 29 and 30 September 2007. Here’s the unfolding story of our fellow comrades who fought a good fight, leaving the opponents awestruck by our performance throughout the entire tournament.

Pool A: Contact Y, Minden Underdawgz 1, Subang Rascals, Dalat 2, and Innebandy! Co
Pool B: Dalat 1, Minden Underdawgz 2, Contact X, Salibandy! Co and Frontliners.

CONTACT Y comprised in majority the junior players with exception to a few. They are Richard (Captain), Joshua Lim (Goalie), Serene, Seow Fei, Calvin, Joshua Lam, Eythan, Joseph, Ian, Ben Lim, Ben Ong and Isaac Ng.
Besides gaining exposure and experiences, the target for CONTACT Y was to beat at least one team. Although formed by majority of junior players, CONTACT Y was well known for tight defending. Rumours had it saying that CONTACT Y may end up in semi finals just by defending goals from the opponents. Well, that did not happen...
The 1st game against Minden Underdawgz 1 was indeed a very good match. Both teams had almost the same strength except for the size of individual players. The game came to a draw of 0-0. CONTACT Y could have won this game if not for the pressure of being the first to play in tournament.
The 2nd game against Subang Rascals was a very tough game. CONTACT Y was expected to lose sorely but the end result was quite bearable considering the fact that Subang Rascals had more experienced, skillful and fast players. Ian managed to block a few shots by opponent, Sasi who is very much well known for his air-hook and hard shots. We lost by 6-0.
The 3rd game was against Dalat 2. Great efforts by each player were shown throughout the game although we still lost by 3-1. Dalat had very aggressive and fast runners which was one of the factors why we lost to them.
The final game was against Innebandy! Co. Although the last game, and no hope of entering into semi-finals, it did not deter the team from playing a good game. There were a lot of shots taken but sadly not on target. Our Captain, Richard a.k.a. the young man showed extreme enthusiasm to keep the team together, playing their hearts out to beat the opponent. A lot of good shots taken by our attackers and good save by our goalie. At last, Calvin made the team proud by scoring a goal against the national keeper, Kao Lin Ken. End result 3-1 lost to Innebandy! Co.
Overall, CONTACT Y did an extremely great job. Although we did not meet our target of beating at least one team, we were able to get a draw against Minden Underdawgz 1 plus we did not get trashed terribly by the other opponent teams. Definitely there is still a lot of room for improvement. Given the time and discipline, I believe this team will be making waves and history in the near future. Hip! Hip! Hurray! CONTACT X comprised the more seasoned players namely Penny (Captain), Yung Ming (Goalie), Edward, James, Henry, Kenny, Bryan, Kit Soon, David, Irwin, Isaac Ang and Nicholas.
Our target was to make it to the finals thus our strategy was to win all games and with a big goal difference to secure the first place in Group B. We determined in our hearts to really make our efforts and presence felt in this tournament. With the leading of our Coach Edward, we are sure we will somehow taste our victories this tournament.
Our first match against Salibandy! Co is a MUST win. Thus our strategy was not to allow any room or space for their deadly attacker to take a single shot. As for us we will take all the opportunities to shoot at goal and go for rebound. This starter game did not have a good effect on the team as a whole. We were just not getting into our game. However, with the scuffle and shuffle in front of their goalie, an own goal gave us our first win in the tournament! 1-0 to us!
We expected our 2nd game against Dalat 1 to be a tougher one. Indeed it was. We were still trying to get into the game and were sucumbed to play at their pace. A mistake that gave the game away. With that, we were caught by their quick counter attacks. But thanks to our Goalie, Yung Ming for his very good saves that left us with just a lost of 0-3 to Dalat 1.
1 win, 1 lost?! By then, we believed we have very good chance to make it to the semi, and ultimately the final!
Our 3rd game was against Frontliners. Another game that we MUST win to secure our placing! After our first two matches, we were a bit more calmed and focus. There were a few changes to our initial line-up. With Nicholas as the centre in the first line, we scored our first goal within seconds after the first face-off. Subsequently, Nicholas and Bryan continued to make wonders to secure a win over Frontliners with score 3-0.
Our final match was against Minden Underdawgz 2. It was quite an easy game. We were in control of the game a whole lot better compared to the previous 3 games. With less pressure from the opponent, we won the game by a score of 5-0.

And finally…the next day….where the real battle began…

Semi-Final: CONTACT X vs Subang Rascal
It was not our target to meet them at the semi-final. However due to our lost to Dalat 1, we had to settle for this. We knew it was not going to be an easy game. With all that we’ve got, we were determined not to make the game any easy for the opponent. It was perhaps the most exciting game throughout the tournament (well, at least to me!). Bryan scored the first goal in a counter attack that gave us the lead of 1-0. However, Sasi returned us another goal to make it to a draw of 1-1. We expected that very goal from Sasi, but we were too slow to respond. With that we had the penalty shots to determine the winner and finalist for the tournament. Our chosen ones to take the penalty were Bryan, Nicholas, Henry, Edward and Kenny. We could have done well in the penalty if not for the disqualification of Bryan’s shot. Accordingly, there was a pull back thus it was considered a no-goal by the referee. But…interestingly…Sasi’s penalty shot was blocked by our amazing Goalie, Yung Ming! With all the hoo-haa…we finally lost to Subang Rascals with a score of 1-3.

Semi-Final: Innebandy! Co vs Dalat 1
It was quite an interesting match to watch! Innebandy! Co was given a total of 6-minutes power play against Dalat 1 (who was down with 3 players then). Even with this edge, Innebandy! Co did not seize the opportunity to attack. Daniel Cheah’s deadly shot could not secure a win for Innebandy! Co. They lost to Dalat 1 with just a mere 0-1.

3rd Placing Match: CONTACT X vs Innebandy! Co
With our failure to make it to the final….with our effort thus far…..we were determined not to go home empty handed. Innebandy’s advantage over us was the Goalie, Kao Lin Ken. We knew if we could break their defense, we could conquer them. With team effort and Edward’s strategy to block the goalie finally paid off to give us the THIRD PLACING and the BRONZE MEDALS! Goals scored by Kenny and Edward! It was indeed a sweet victory!!

Finals: Dalat 1 vs Subang Rascals
Very fast speed and high intensity match! Dalat 1 crumbled at the hands of Subang Rascals as both Sasi and Fabien were all over them. The Rascals taking the goal medal with a 4-0 win over Dalat 1.

This is our second time walking away with bronze medals! Our first time was also Dalat League, held in year 2005. Sweet memories, sweet victories! But we will not rest in our laurels…we will continue to strive and make our presence and effort felt in all tournaments to come! So….WATCH-OUT!!
Nicholas was awarded one of the top scorers alongside Sasi of Subang Rascals. Hip! Hip! Hurray! For Nicholas! Keep it coming and make history for Team Contact and Penang floorball!!!

AYA Awards

It all happened somewhere in mid August… It was a very busy week and it was both physically and emotionally wrecking for me due to personal issues, work, and ministry - everything all lumped up together. But when I received a phone call informing me that someone nominated Contact Sports for the AYA Dream Malaysia Awards, it truly brightened up my week. I was dumb founded! A lot of questions ran through my mind, “Who nominated us? What is this award all about? How did we get there? What have we done to deserve such a nomination?” I was really excited! It was like - WOW! HURRAY! I just couldn’t sit still. I needed to tell someone, I needed to let it out, I needed to….I needed to….especially tell my boss!! We were nominated for “Youth Friendly Company of the Year 2007!”

Checking out their website you will discover that Asian Youth Ambassador (AYA) is a non-profit organization that exists to inspire young people to dare to dream and working towards realizing their dreams for the benefit of all. The AYA Dream Malaysia Awards is about our future - and the people who are farsighted enough to invest in it. Started in year 2005, the Awards is in line with AYA’s objective of building tomorrow’s leaders today and to create a better and brighter future for Malaysia by inspiring, inciting and inculcating responsible attitudes and actions especially – but not exclusively – in the hearts and minds of our youths. This Award serves as an encouragement to emerging individuals and responsible institutions to persevere in their dreams of improving the quality of life for themselves and for those around them in spite of the difficulties and obstacles they encounter.

What I found most interesting is that the person who nominated us expressed that, “This company (Contact Sports) exists not for personal gain but rather, its vision is to build the youth of tomorrow physically, socially and mentally, and to see them rise up for the betterment of our future!”

Wow….this is so uplifting to the spirit! Sometimes I wonder if we’ve made any impact at all to those whom we have come into contact the past 3-4 years, but this has been very encouraging. Thank you so much Mr. Shaun. Thanks for believing in us! Thanks for the nomination!

The week after the phone call, AYA staffs were in Penang doing an interview with us. It was a great yet nerve wrecking experience to be in front of a camera. It was great also to get to know the people who are so passionate about AYA and what they do. Syabas to them!

Not long after that, we were told that from the list of all that were nominated, we had been short-listed for the awards. Well, there is only one more thing to do… go to the website and VOTE FOR US!

5v5 Indoor Soccer Challenge

For the second year, Contact Sports organized its’ 5v5 Indoor Soccer Challenge with the aim to promote the sport in the region of Penang. This year, we saw participation of 10 teams for the challenge held on 26 May 2007 at the Indoor Premier League, Gembira Parade. We were gald to have 5 teams which participated last year and were back in action again this year. They are Inti A & B, Legend Killer FC, Sri Pelita Tigers and One United FC. This time they came back with more force and substance to make it to the finals, and ultimately to take home the gold medals. The teams were divided into two groups through drawing of lots. Preliminary matches were played simultaneously with the top 2 teams from each group moving on to semi-finals. Every match was intense since the preliminary as every team determined to stay on top. One can see true colors of each person through the game. A slight commotion happened during one of the semi-final match. An unsporting behavior and crude language by the player resulted in getting him a yellow card. Overall, it was truly a challenging ‘Challenge’. The Challenge was won by Gelugor Football Club (GFC), followed by SPG FC and Inti A. Prizes courtesy of Indoor Premier League, Fuji and Yeos.

PFA Challenge

Penang Floorball Association recently organized its’ 2-days tournament, the PFA Challenge 2007 at Dalat International School. The tournament was organized with the aim to foster closer bonding between the different clubs in Penang as well as Selangor Floorball Association (SFA). A tournament of the same was previously jointly organized by SFA and UM (Universiti Malaya in March.

This state-wide tournament was one that the clubs are looking forward to, especially for Contact team. With all energy and force concentrated on the tournament, Contact was determined to make it to the final. The participating clubs were Innebandy! Co, Salibandy! Co, Frontliners, Selangor Floorball Association, Dalat Moldy Oldies, Dalat Eagles and Contact. The preliminary matches were played in round robin system with top 4 winners qualifying for the semi-final.

Our very first match against SFA proved to be very demanding to our spirit and strength. Playing against the giants of SFA, Contact played a very tight defensive game. Petit scored the first goal in a counter attack that gave us the lead of 1-0. However, we lost the match by 2-1.

The subsequent matches against Innebandy! Co, and Dalat Modly Oldies were more or less due to our lack of stamina and focus. We lost in these 2 matches. Our match against the Frontliners was just as tough. They fielded in their better and faster players. This match was a draw for both teams. The goal was scored from the side by their man who was unmarked. The mistake of our defenders!

The other 2 matches against Dalat and Salibandy! Co was slightly easier. We won both matches. Dalat was down to only 5 players including their goalie. Our hats off Dalat for displaying such good spirit of sportsmanship! As for Salibandy! Co, it was a favor to us to not have Deswyn, their key player in the match. (He was injured prior to our game!)

Contact who has always been known as the underdog of floorball due to the many young players. However Contact unbelievably proved the crowd wrong by qualifying for semi-final. Contact would have made it to the final if not for the last minute disputable goal. Some said that it was a not a goal, while others said it was. As the rules said, referee’s decision is final. Thus, it was the referee’s call that gave the ultimate score of 1-0 for Dalat Eagles and Contact.

It was truly a very good experience for all of us in Contact although we did not make it to the final. We are certainly proud to be in this team for making it so far! We will continue to strive and make our efforts count in the coming tournaments!

Youthwave Floorball Tournament

Once again, Innebandy! Co emerged champion! Ever since the conception of floorball and the very 1st Youthwave Floorball Tournament held in year 2003, Innebandy! Co has been the defending champion! Formerly known as Blazing Eagles, Innebandy! Co has been blazing with victory the past four years!
The format for this year was different. It was a 4v4 game without a goalie and a smaller goalpost measuring 60cm x 80cm in a court size of 26m x 16m. 3 matches were played simultaneously in 3 different courts. The change of format was to encourage participation from more teams and indeed there was in total 29 teams. A record breaking number in the history of Malaysian floorball! We had many new faces from the Men, Ladies and Kids category. Strength of each team was more or less even out yet with a mixture of new players and experienced players.

Men’s Category
This category would have the most intense matches with 14 teams battling it out on court to take home the Challenge Trophy. Some new faces were from the Minden Underdawgz (USM) who played very well. No sign of intimidation although they have just started playing a couple of months ago. They would have made it to the semi if not for the lost on goal difference. Another fresh team was the Salibandy! Co (a subsidiary club of Innebandy! Co) led by Mr. Deswyn Wan, (Canadien Spokesperson in Malaysia). The team made it to the finals to meet their ‘Parent Club’. Another team would be none other than our very own, Contact team, which fielded new and less experienced players. Although fresh in blood, raw in the game, Contact did not show any sign of intimidation. They played their utmost best to emerge 4th in the preliminary table. Something to be really proud of! Contact players were David Ng, Clictus Teh, Isaac Ang, AndrewNg, Joshua Lam and Kenny Khoo (the only experienced and seasoned player)!

Ladies Category
Once again, Contact did not manage to send any ladies’ team to Youthwave Floorball Tournament. As such, Goh Simin was ‘loaned’ to Innebandy! Co for this tournament. She played very well to win the top scorer award for the second year! With the downsizing of number of players per team, there were in total 10 ladies’ team. Ladies’ matches were not any less intense compared to the men’s. Most of the goals scored were penalty goals. Minden Underdawgz was the only new team in this. The rest were from Frontliners, Innebandy! Co, Methodist Girls’ School and 412 Unlimited. Champion: Frontliners-Roses

Kids’ Category
This is perhaps the most interesting category. As the age range was from 7-12 years old, thus the kids came in various shapes and sizes. Contact Floorball School had a mixture of girls and boys in the team and most of their sizes were relatively small compared to the others. Known as team Floorball Kids, they battled it out against the ‘giants’ of other teams with true spirit of sportsmanship. Some of our other Contact Club kids formed another team, named Impact. This team did fairly well in all the matches. Champion: Dalat Eagles

Contact vs Frontliners Friendly Match

Finally the time has come! This friendly match was planned months before but due to unavailability of courts all around Penang, it took us 4 months to make the match into a reality. The last friendly match against Frontliners (about a year ago), Contact lost to Frontliners.

This time round, Contact was determined to make a good comeback! The match was held at Balik Pulau Sports Complex with proper rink boards and actual court size of 40mx20m. The court size posted a threat to many beginners for both teams. However to the more experienced and senior players, it was almost ‘heaven’!

It was not an easy match for Contact as most of our players are very young in age and in the game. But with the dedication and experiences of our Coach Edward, our presence ‘intimidated’ the Frontliners and with that, all Contact players roared their way to victory of 8-3, the final score. Thanks to Kenny (who joins us beginning of the year) scored an amazing 3 powerful angle shots for the team! The other goals were scored by Simin, Henry, Edward, Bryan and Uncle Sam.

Floorball Demo at CLS

A 2-hour floorball demonstration was conducted at Convent Light Street (Secondary) on 28 February 2007. The demonstration was well attended by students from the Christian Fellowship. The demonstration started off with Edward giving an introduction of the game, the history and rules of the game. Both Penny and Ming Hwee assisted in the introduction. The students were then divided into groups to have a hands-on of the game. The students were taught the basics of the game – simple passes, shots, and ball control. The students got ‘hysterical’ trying to go for the ball and shooting at the goal. As the demonstration was held in a hall without proper "wall", the game could not be carried out in proper manner. Despite that, the students were still participative and gave very good feedback on the game. Hopefully, this will be one game that will soon make its debut in the school!

SYN Charity Carnival

Contact Sports was granted the honour to service SYN (Steven Yeam’s Network) and Gerakan Wanita Malaysia in the Charity Carnival held on 11 February 2007 at Youth Park, Penang. The carnival was organized in aid of several homes and orphanages in Penang.
The exciting day started as early as 6am for all the SYN crew and volunteers, including Contact staff that had to set up 5 games stall. The games stalls were planned with both the kids and adults in mind. Attractive prizes and toys were in store for all who played the games. There were 2 easy stalls which catered to the kids - ‘Scoop-A-Duck’ whereby kids were required to scoop up the mini rubber ducks from the pond and win prizes. The other easy game stall was ‘Submarine Treasure’ whereby the kids were required to drop the one cent coin into the small container that was placed in the aquarium.
The other 3 games stalls were a bit more challenging which catered to adults. They were ‘The Relocator’. Players for this stall will be required to shoot the color balls with the water gun given into the designated holes within 45 seconds. There was also a ‘Dart Challenge’, and the most interesting and challenging stall was ‘Cosmic Shoot-Out’ or more known as ‘Precision Shoot-Out’. It was a game that was improvised from floorball. Players had to hit the precision balls into designated holes using floorball stick.
The day was filled with people from all walks of life. The games stalls added sparks to the whole carnival as we saw many kids and adults flocking the stalls, especially towards the later part of the afternoon where most people were done with lunch.
It was indeed a very successful and meaningful carnival as we saw young people serving and raising fund for the less fortunate. It is definitely true to the saying of ‘Service Above Self!”

Youthwave Floorball Tournament

The 3rd Penang Youthwave Floorball Tournament, ranked as one of the much awaited floorball event of the year was held at the Balik Pulau Sports Complex. Although it seemed to be a long journey from town to Balik Pulau, it did not deter players and supporters to throng the place. They were all just simply floorball maniacs!! A sure good sign of floorball development in Penang! This year, we had a new category, the Under-12 Mixed Team, so as to encourage more junior players to play floorball. 3 teams vied for the gold medals and challenge trophy, and they played a total of 4 matches each, 2 matches against the same team. Indeed it was a very outstanding performance by the kids, possibly the category with the most goals scored. Team Impact emerged Champion, while trailing behind was Sri Pelita, and Frontliners Kids. Bryan Looi (Team Impact, also one of Contact players) played very well, garnered 9 goals in the overall matches which gave him the Top Scorer award. Joshua Lim (Team Impact), with his excellent moves and good saves won him the Best Goalie award. The Ladies' category comprised 4 teams. Frontliners sent 2 teams while Innebandy! Co and G12 (Methodist Girl's School) sent a team each. This year we saw many new faces in the Ladies' category and some excellent play by the more experienced players. Frontliners did not do too well this time round, paved the way for G12 to take home the Challenge Trophy and Innebandy! Co, the second placing. The Top Scorer award went to Goh Simin (Team Frontliners B, also Contact player) with 2 goals. Although there were another 2 candidates with 2 goals scored but award was given to her based on her good play. The Best Goalie award went to Ithrana (Team G12).This year, we had a total of 7 teams in the Men's category. St. Xavier's Institution, considered as rookie of floorball in Penang did the school proud by emerging as one of the semi-finalist. However Frontliners, coupled with skillful and experienced players, beat St. Xavier's Institution with a score of 3-1 to win the bronze medals. The final match was the most interesting, one that got everybody on their toes. The final was between Innebandy! Co and MyTeam. Both teams played very well, but Nicholes of Innebandy! Co scored the final goal to make it to 3-2, a win over MyTeam. It has been three consecutive years for Innebandy! Co (formerly known as Blazing Eagles) to take home the Challenge Trophy. Looks like it is theirs to keep! Deswyn Wan and Kao Lin Ken, both from Innebandy! Co were awarded the Top Scorer and Best Goalie respectively.It was truly a great tournament, with great players, great goalies, great teams, great supporters and not to mention great sponsors. Many thanks to Excel again for their generous contribution as well as Express Systems (Pg) Sdn. Bhd., Raine & Horne and Great Jack-In for their contribution towards the rink boards. Prize presentation was held on the following day, 11/6/06 at Full Gospel Assembly, Air Itam. Players and supporters packed the place for concert, prizes and watching themselves on the video clips!

Penang Floorball League

The much awaited event, the first Penang League 2006 organised by the Penang Floorball Association kicked off on 18 February 2006 with a participation from 5 teams namely Innebandy! Co, Frontliners, Contact, Penang Islanderz and Dalat. The opening match between Innebandy! Co and Dalat got the players and supporters on their toes, all wanting to see who will take the lead in the league. It was definitely a good fight between both teams. Innebandy! Co won the match by a score of 9-3. Losing only a game to Frontliners in the overall league, they took home the Challenge Trophy and having their name marked down in the history of Penang Floorball for being the Champion of the 1st Penang League. Syabas! The 1st Runner-Up went to Penang Islanderz who did fairly well in the league. Frontliners who did not do too well in the first few matches rose above their inferior position by winning Innebandy! Co and Dalat in their last two games. With the 2 wins, they stood a chance to take home the bronze medal. However, Dalat managed to keep their 2nd Runner-up position by winning over Contact in their last game. Contact did not do very well in this league, technically. But then, despite the continuous loss in the matches played, it did not dampen the team spirit. Everyone certainly did their best to make every match count. The last game against Innebandy! Co was ultimately the best game in the whole league. At the third and final period, Contact had drew 4-4 with Innebandy! Co. It was indeed a close and tough fight as the team trailed behind Innebandy! Co to allow them the win of 7-6. The league which ran for 6 weeks was held in Dalat International School . The league got many people excited, regular players, non-regular players, non-players, young and old alike. Supporters flocked the arena every match to cheer for their favorite teams. It was indeed a great scene to see many being involved in the development of floorball in Penang whether directly or indirectly. Cheers to all who came!!

Contact Floorball A-League

In conjunction with the Penang League, Contact Sports organized an alternative league aptly named ‘A-LEAGUE' to cater to the younger players. It was held from the 26th of February till the 12th of March. An alternative league to the Penang Floorball League, this league is designed for all to participate. With restrictions on national players and participants of the Penang League, this is an event that will meet players where they are at. This league was a platform to identify and nurture younger players for the development of floorball in Penang. The league which runs for 3 consecutive weeks beginning 26 February 2006 , attracted the participation of 3 teams from the Frontliners, St. Xavier's Institution (SXI) and Contact Juniors.This league is of no less importance than the Penang League although the latter caters to the more seasoned players, state players and national players. It got many people excited over it, players and supporters alike, particularly parents of the players who flocked the Penang Red Crescent Society Hall for the 3 weeks. Many of the players had their first taste of playing in a league, with official size goalpost and goalkeeper. The first and opening match between SXI and Frontliners was full of intense and actions as we saw the latter trailing behind SXI . The Frontliners had to field in one of their outfield players as goalkeeper at a very last minute to win the match by a score of 9-8. A very close fight indeed!The second match was between Frontliners and Contact Juniors. Contact Juniors comprised mostly kids below 12 years old fought a great battle against the more experienced players from the Frontliners. Although they lost by 11-4, it was truly a great experienced for the first-timers. The final match saw SXI and Contact Juniors battling in the court for the 1st Runner-Up placing. Although small in size, Contact Juniors showed no intimidation to take on challenges. Their never-give up attitude and an excellent spirit truly deserved applause. SXI won the match by a score of 4-3. All's well, end's well with Frontliners emerging Champion, whilst SXI got the second placing and Contact Juniors the third placing. The league would not have been such a great success without the enthusiasm for floorball by the players, supporters, helpers and our faithful sponsor, EXCEL isotonic drinks. Hip hip hurray for all who make this event a reality!!!

Kids Floorball Challenge

ContactSports organised its first 3-on-3 Kids Floorball Challenge on Saturday at the Penang Red Crescent Society. The event which serves as a platform to introduce floorball to the public, received great response in terms of participation and cheering crowd. A total of 24 teams of kids ranging from 6-12 years old mainly from churches and organisations participated in the event. Before 9am (the time which the matches were supposed to start), kids and parents were already seen flocking the place. Some were just curious to know exactly what floorball is. Some others were seen practicing their passes and shots (especially those from the Floorball School!) As most of the kids were first timers coming to experience the game, a crash course on how to play floorball was given by Edward just before the matches took place. Both categories (junior and senior, in terms of age) had their matches run simultaneously. All the kids showed their enthusiasm on court by playing their hearts out, although they were new to the game. The kids from the Floorball School did the school proud by qualifying for semi-finals, and 2 teams, each from Junior and Senior category emerged champions. The junior champions were represented by Josiah, Ashlynn and Nathalynn who made their debut appearance in a floorball competition. The Senior Champions were represented by Eythan, Nicholas and Ross. Overall, it was truly an awesome event with participation from all the teams, cheers and support from the crowd, assistance from referees and helpers and last but not least, contribution of drinks and hampers from Excel Cranberry Isotonic Drinks. Syabas folks!

Junior World of Floorball Challenge

A half day competition called the "Junior 3-on-3 World of Floorball Challenge" was organised and held in Dalat International School today. There were altogether 8 junior teams; of which 5 were from Dalat (Jets, Justice League, Fire, Eaglets & Tripod), 2 from the Innebandy! Co. club (Innebandy I & II) and 1 representing Team Contact (Contact Juniorz with Bryan Looi, Nicholas Yeoh and Calvin Tan). Contact Juniorz had a slow and shakey start for their 1st game against Jets; which they marginally lost by 0-1 with some tough defending by the team. After some minor changes in positions, Contact Juniorz came back with a vengence in their 2nd game against a rather tired and subdued Justice League. Contact Juniorz won the game 6-0; in which Bryan scored 4 goals and Nicholas 2 goals. The 3rd game against Fire was basically a must win situation in order for Contact Juniorz to progress to the semi-finals stage of the competition. Although trailing early in the game by 1 goal, Contact Juniorz held their round, persevered and came back to win the game by 4-1 (3 goals by Bryan and 1 by Nicholas) and earned their spot in the semi-finals. The semi-final game against Eaglets was by far the most exciting game for the team. Contact Juniorz played their hearts out and continued fighting although were found trailing behind. In the end, Contact Juniors lost by 2-4. Bryan and Nicholas scored a goal each. Contact Juniorz's final game to determine either the bronze medal or 4th placing, was against Tripod. Both teams were already rather tired but continued to play a good game. Contact Juniorz opened the scoring with a goal from Nicholas. Tripod then came back with the equaliser mid way through the game. With the bronze medal at stake, Contact Juniorz pressed on and clinched the winner, with another goal by Nicholas. Final score 2-1 to Contact Juniorz and the bronze medal. The final standings, Jets - champion, Eaglets - silver medal and Contact Juniorz - bronze medal.

3-on-3 Floorball Challenge

The first 3-on-3 Floorball Challenge hit Penang at the Red Crescent Society. The half-day event attracted 8 men's teams and 3 ladies' teams from various clubs and schools in Penang . Although we had other teams who expressed their interest to participate but could not do so due to exam period, nevertheless with such moderate number of teams all present truly enjoyed themselves. The event saw the debut appearance of junior players who currently train under the Frontliners Club. Calling themselves The Fearless, they showed no sign of fear and intimidation when playing against experienced players like the Penang Islanderz. Although they did not win any matches, they certainly took home an abundance of experiences and are definitely looking forward to more of such events. KDU Penang also made their debut appearance. They were the first college to be a part of floorball development in Penang and we certainly see some good players in the making. Innebandy! Co. (formerly known as Blazing Eagles) and Penang Islanderz showed very consistent game and won all the 3 matches to top their table. Both teams made it to the finals and fought a good fight on court. Penang Islanderz which showed some really good play were the better of the both that day and won the Champion's title by a score of 4-3. They took away gold medals, Precision balls and hampers by Excel. The 3rd Placing match was no less intense as Team Underdogs and Permata played a very good game as well. Underdogs won the 2nd Runner-Up title to take home the bronze medals. The Ladies' teams – (FH)2, Sempoi and Xcel were determined to play their utmost best to get a good worth of their money and also to win the Champion's title. Team (FH)2 comprising 2 players of Contact Club namely Sarah Ng and Melisa Leng together with Sharon Tan and Tabitha of Frontliners Club managed to top the Ladies' team to bring home the gold medals, Precision balls and hampers by Excel and Precision. Indeed it was a good event for Contact Sports to fulfill its visions in helping people make the right contacts and develop skills and precision. Overall, it was also a good event for many to develop friendships and gain experiences. A good development for the Penang Floorball scene as well! Dalat Floorball League

The Dalat Floorball League was from October 1-23, and Team Contact made its debut appearance on 1/10/05 with a match against Blazing Eagles. The team did fairly well battling against an experienced team despite having trained only once on the week week prior to the match. All the players were in high spirit and everyone rose up to the occasion and played their utmost best. A humble beginning for the team, we lost 1-3, but definitely a great team in the making…..

The second match on 8/10/05 was against the Frontliners. Team effort arose within each member as we strived to not just defend but attack in every way possible. That spirit contributed to the success of our team as we won the game with the score of 2-1.

We played against Dalat 2 on 15/10/05. We did not do as well for the first period but that did not stop us from playing a better game for the second and final period. Favor was on us when Edward scored a penalty shot to give us a 3-2 lead. We won the match 5-2.

Our fourth match was against Penang Islanderz on 22/10/05. The team did not rest on the laurels even after winning two previous matches consecutively. The team played a good game against one of the strongest team in the whole Penang . Although we lost 2-6, the cheering of our supporters made us feel like champions for that night.

The final match against Dalat 1 on 23/10/05 was the match that will determine our placing in the tournament. With our intense desire to win this match and our eyes targeted on the bronze medals, every player put up a good fight. Even the goalkeeper had many good saves. It was an excellent team game with different players scoring goals. Bryan scored 2 goals with James (his dad) giving us the opening goal. We won the match 5-3. It was indeed a sweet victory for the team and the best game for us in the whole mini league!

Floorball Demo in Schools

The months of September and October saw ContactSports take floorball into a number of schools. On September 23, We took floorball into SK Air Itam. The demonstration was targeted at 10-12 year olds and approximately 130 students of both boys and girls participated in the demo.

On September 24, we went into an all boys' school, SK Wellesley as part of their Children's Day program to conduct a floorball demonstration. We saw approximately 250 students ranging from 7 to 12 year-olds, getting all excited even before getting a hands-on experience with the stick and ball. Many enjoyed themselves.

September 28, We had the opportunity to go into a Chinese School. Targeted at the 10-11 year olds, we saw approximately 200 students from SJK (C) Jelutong participate in the demonstration. Boys and girls alike regardless of their sizes, showed their interest in wanting to learn the game. The school later purchased a set of equipment and are on their way to setting up a club.

October 01, Hutchings Primary School was the venue for our floorball demonstration. Once again it was targeted at the 7 to 12 year-olds as part of their Children's Day program. The interesting thing about this day was that the teachers also came to participate and sweat it out on court. Approximately 150 students and their teachers were present for this unforgettable experience of the adrenalin pumping game.

October 10, was the date we went into an all girls' primary school, SRK Convent Pulau Tikus for a session with the 10 year-olds. Approximately 100 students attended the introduction session and viewing of floorball clips. Many signed up on that very day to learn more about floorball and showed interest to join a club.

On October 18, we were taking floorball into yet another chinesse primary school - SJK (C) Shang Wu. Approximately 200 students comprising boys and girls ages 10 and 11 showed their enthusiasm in trying out the newly introduced game.

These two months were exiting in getting the kids to experience the game of floorball. We definately hope that we will have more of such opportunities to share floorball with more kids.

3-on-3 Futsal Challenge

The 3-on-3 Futsal Challenge saw 12 teams, all sweating it out on the court vying for the top 3 placing. This event was organized to provide an avenue for young people to have healthy activity and foster good friendships. The matches were played on round robin basis in 4 groups comprising teams from various colleges, schools and churches. Many supporters came to cheer for their favourite team. Disted College which sent 2 teams won the title with "Disted Chan-Ka" emerging as the Champion. "Average Joe" from Dalat School won the 1st Runner-up title, whilst "Bayan Baru FC (B)" emerged as the 2nd Runner-up. It was definitely a tough fight between "Disted Chan-Ka" and "Average Joe" with a score of 5-3. All the top 3 teams took away medals, hampers and vouchers courtesy of Prangin Sports Centre. Vico graced the event as well by providing chocolate drinks for the players and supporters. Many thanks to all the sponsors, helpers and also the referees, Mr. Saras and Mr. Joshua Lim for a good show!

Floorball School Established

Contact Floorball School was established to further train players who desired to take the sport seriously. The school offers comprehensive floorball programmes conducted by committed and experienced coaches that target both new and seasoned players. It will lay a foundation for the students right from the very basics of floorball. This school currently runs its programmes at the Red Crescent Society from 4.00-5.00pm every Wednesday. We hope that to grow the school in providing more sessions in the near future to accomodate more players who are serious about getting the right technique of the game.

WFC 2005

The Women’s 5th World Championship was held in Singapore from the 28 May-5 June 2005. Ms. Sarah Ng, Ms. Goh Simin and Ms. Penny Khoo from our club represented Malaysia in the championship. Mr. Edward Lim was the Asst. Manager of the Malaysian contingent. This was the first time these 3 have represented Malaysia in the WFC and it was truly an experience to be remembered.

Youthwave Floorball Tournament

The 2nd Penang Youthwave Floorball Tournament 2005 was held at the Balik Pulau Sports Complex. 15 teams from various clubs and schools participated in the adrenalin- pumping-tournament. Contact Floorball Club did not send a team as we dispersed our players to other teams. Our players played their hearts out in the tournament. Ms. Sarah Ng emerged Best Women Player for the second year. The whole tournament was generously sponsored by Penang Floorball Association (PFA), 100 Plus, Vico, Fujifilm and others who wished to remain anonymous.
